I give my guy $5 tip... am I being too nice?

The place is not always busy. I say he gets like 10-15 customers a day average.

you give a $5 tip on a $12 haircut? i would say that's too much unless he's the Chuck Norris of the hair world.

for reference my regular barber is totally kick ass and i give her a $5 tip on a $15 haircut. if she's not available, for anyone else usually $2 or $3 depending on how good it is

My hairdresser get $40 for a haircut.

then there is a $7 tip and $3 for the shampoo girl.

a hair cut costs me $50 and takes about 1/2 hour from door to door.
 
My stylist makes about $30-$40 for a cut n' style.

I pay cheaper though since my hair isn't as hard to work with. 😛

Don't bother trying to get it, I've turned in my man card long ago when I was raised in a whole other country.

ALWAYS! And he throws in a free beard triming in. I like the line along my jaw and I can't do it myself worth sh!t.

I have a ton of hair because I'm lazy and don't get it cut as often as I should. he charges 11$ bucks does a kick ass job, and it takes him at least 30 minutes. Tipping is a must for me!

Last hair cut I got, I did this (no coupon tho, they were having a sale), and tipped the girl $12. I told her that I was expecting to pay $18 when I walked in the door, so that's what i'll pay, she gets a bonus for the difference. She was needless to say very happy.
 
not every haircut lasts only 15 mins... and they probably don't work 40 hour weeks either but i guess its not too shabby... 🙂
 
I dated a hairstylist for couple of years, I helped her with her taxes. I know for a fact that she was making over $70,000 / year and she worked 4 days a week. She had full medical benefits.
She had maxed out her client list, and when you went in for a haircut, if you want another appointment, you had to book it then a month in advance. Additionally, if she would do the hair for a wedding party on a Saturday morning, there was an easy $200+ tip.
She has been a stylist for 15+ years

Two things, where they work and their personality, will determine how much they will make.

The chick at super cuts isn't doing near that well.
 
I got a hair cut today... 12+5 tip. I go to the same guy, he always takes care of me. It's more of a respect and a thank you to tip that much. It is 1 block from wall street, but I used to tip my guy in Staten Island the same thing. To each his own I guess.
 
I've gone to the same barber for about 20 years (I'm 22). $7 cut. I tip him $3 to make it an even $10 for a haircut once a month. I've paid him $2400 in 20 years.
 
My wife's mother is a hair sylist. They can make a lot of money depending on how hard you want to work. She books people, she doesn't accept walk-ins and can be as busy or as slow as she wants normally. The problem is is that you can often get behind because someone may not exactly like the color you gave them or it may just not turn out right and you have to fix it. My mother-in-law makes probably 40K per year. Some of her co-workers make up to around 60K because they book themselves solid and work about 10 hours per day.

In a day....that wasn't every day, but like someone else said it all depends on where she works and her personality. She works in a nice salon (i.e. NOT a Hair Cuttery) and everyone who meets her loves her. she's crazy in the head, but once you meet her you can't help but like her.

And as someone else said, a big part of that is eat up in supplies (no, not just water smackdown). She'll spend $100 on a pair of clippers EASY. $300 to $400 for a pair of scissors is not abnormal either, and they usually have different sets for different cuts.

Color is a huge cost too. She'll drop $600 at a time on color.

Yep. This is true. Some of the top stylists in KC make $150k/yr. It all depends on where you work. The salon I'm familiar with charges $30 for a men's haircut. The stylist gets 1/2 of that and my haircut takes 15 minutes with shampoo. That's $60/hr for that stylist plus tip. But they aren't busy all the time.
