Hair's thinning out fast...what can I do?

Hi guys, I still have a full head of hair but I have noticed that it's been thinning out an an alarming rate. If it continues I could probably be bald by 25. Does anyone have any suggestions for stopping or at least slowing it down a bit? I'm pretty distrustful of those "stop hairloss NOW" products but does anyone have any positive experience with any?

best bet is to go to a doctor and get his opinion. he will probably put you on some perscription for it.

I'm afraid the best fix is to go shopping for a better set of genes. You should probably ask a doctor about stuff like Rogaine. It may have undesirable side effects, and once you start on it, you're hooked for life, or you could lose whatever hair it preserves.

Good luck. :)

Hair cures are bullsh!t, or expensive to keep up at best.
When (if) you get VERY thin on top, do yourself a favor and cut your hair *short*.

Basically, when someone is very thin or bald on top: the longer your hair the worse it looks; the shorter the better it looks.

Similar to what DrSmooth said, if your mother's brother/s are bald you probably will be too.

I think the maternal grandfather reference is a fallacy. My grandfather still has quite a bit of his hair, didn't start going bald until way into his 40s, and he looks great. My brother has an unbelievable thick, and full head of hair. I, on the other hand, am thinning.

No rhyme or reason I say. There are current "theories" as to what elicits the thinning process, but no one seems to know for sure.

I'm 22. The weird thing is, my grandfathers on both parents' sides still have full heads of hair, and they're in their 60s. :(

My mom's brother also has a full thick head of hair. I just don't get it.

Accept your fate, or wait for the loss to stabilize and get hair plugs.

What ever you do, don't get a toupe.

As for the genetic question... Was your Mom especially fond of the milkman? ;)

Seriously, though, how does your Dad's hair look?

true, though i think it largely depends on the attractiveness of the shape of your skull and facial bones, jawline cheekbones, chin etc. which dictates how good you may look shaven, bah too much emphasis on looks!

-surely research to see a doc, you may have a scalp condition that's making the hair fall out? hense don't they sell that shampoo nizoral or whatever?

-of course the otherside of it is the hereditary situation where you can't do anything about it, like Andre Agassi... perhaps propecia via prescription, not to regrow but to maintain what you have.

The last thing I heard about this, in my genetics course, was that the gene(s) for baldness are on the X chromosome. Lets assume you are balding because of genetics, this means that you got the gene from your mother. Your mother has two X chromosomes, one X from her mother and the other from her father (your grandfather).

Okay lets say your mother has one X chromosome with the balding gene then you and your brothers had a 50% change of getting the gene.

I should have asked, does your grandmother or grandfather have thinning hair?

I've always suspected that it was a lack of vitamins, minerals, and complete proteins. Being overweight and using hair products probably don't help either. Good luck with your problem. :)

My Dad's 50 and still has hair (albeit a little thin, but no balding). What sucks though is my Mom's hair has been thinning out a lot- does anyone know for sure which side it comes from?

No G/F at the present, but I have been a bit stressed the last few years doing a tough engineering curriculum in college.

Only bald men say that.

For doctors: what doc should I see? A a general physician or a specialist like a dermatologist?

Mani,

If you're going to go bald, there isn't a damned thing you can do about it, other then a transplant. All the other garbage on the market is useless and some is even harmful. Besides, just tell people that bald spot is a solar panel on a sex machine.
