Hair styling products for male?? Need ur advice

What kind of product (gel, mousse, spray, wax and etc...) is the least harmful to hair? I have curly hair and I am looking for something that holds the styling and yet keep the hair soft and natural looking. I've tried gel that basically was like glue and that didn't work well... Any input in greatly appreciated.

My friends use something called lab-paste, but I'm not sure how "harmful" it is for your hair.

edit: try a couple of different things, but I recommend something that has a matte finish, since you want the hair to look natural. I'm not sure how you could keep it soft though. Matte mousse?
