Hair gel question.

Alright I haven't used hair gel in about 6 years, and back when I did it I used cheap crappy stuff that I hated. It was a pain to put on (really runny), dried hard as a rock, and practically fractured if I touched my hair when it was dry.

I'll likely be doing the messy hair look, but I might go for the comb-forward if it looks nice. I'd like some sort of gel that doesn't dry hard as a rock, lasts a long time, and remains somewhat pliable. Would this even be a gel? Is it more of a mousse? I'm lost here. Links to actual products that do what I want would be great. Oh, and I'd be awesome if the stuff was flexible enough that I could wear a baseball cap over it, and then it would still look ok after taking the cap off and moving my hair around a little bit.

Try "glue" or "molding putty" if you want a messy look. Pomade I find isn't that strong, but I do like to add in a little pomade for some shine. I don't like wax because it's hard to wash off and leaves residue.

At least with wax you can rework it easily after you've worn your cap. And as far I know, there aren't any products that will give you what you styled after you've worn a cap.

And don't buy cheap stuff, go to a salon and buy some decent products.

Yeah, I've used American Crew gel and pomade. I like them both. I'm guessing you want pomade, but I ain't none expert in hair fixun.

The likely reason your hair went rock hard is putting gel on wet instead of dry hair. As for the messy look, putty or cream/wax mix will do nicely.

You can try some mousse. Easy to work with. Apply it on damp hair if you want it to be shinier, dry if you want a not so shiny look.

Dude, if you want a decent answer you got to give decent info.

His your hair thick or thin? Is it curly or straight? Is it dry or oily? Is it short? medium? long?

i use american crew hair gel. i have short hair that is usually pretty dry and straight. i can't do crap with my hair because i don't know what to do, like you.

I used to use gel but switched to mousse. You need a lot less stuff and it leaves your hair feeling and looking more natural. None of that wet goopiness.

Definitely use wax. Stay away from anything "wet" because it's gonna leave your hair sticky or crunchy/hard.

At the risk of sounding too metrosexual, I recommend using FX Special Effects Molding Wax. Comes in a little round container with green labeling (if it's available in your area). I get it at CVS for like $5.99. Just rub some in your hands and put it through your hair while it's still slighly damp from showering. Dries somewhat soft but holds well. A little goes a long way as well so don't overdo it.

Edited to add link: FX Molding Wax

I think I have to turn in my man card on that post alone. 😱

meh don't be so quick to turning in your man card. but i'll take it anyways. *shreds*

I use Suave gel for men with a Suave finishing spray. I've found that the Suave finishing spray works better than Paul Mithcell in that I can be a little more rough (for lack of a better word?) with my hair and it won't go flat. You won't be able to wear a baseball cap with it, but if you bump your head on something or have an itch your hair won't become soft.

Tried Pomade once and it was too goopy for me. Was tough to wash out of my hair, always made me hair feel oily.

I'd say thin to medium. Straight. Fairly dry I presume though I don't have much to base that against. Roughly an inch long right now. I'm going to grow it out a bit more as long as it still looks ok. When my hair was shorter it used to stick straight out of my head, but now that it's getting a little longer it's finally starting to lay flat a bit.

Thanks for all the help guys. Now I have some stuff to look for at the store and try out.
