hair gel = hair loss???

Ive heard that using hair gel increases hair loss...any truth to that???
and does that apply to ALL hair gels, the weak ones and the strong ones??
like the Paul Mitchell style ones vs. the ones that make your hair REALLY crunchy??

How would hair gel equate to hair loss? Your hair is dead above the root anyway. Its not like your killing your hair.

If anything your hair may become brittle and fall out, but since your aren't killing the root it should grow back.

Edit: Typo.

Man, I remember when I was younger using Dippity Do gel in my hair to achieve the slick look, that stuff made my hair so crunchy I really thought it was going to fall out!

well in my book hair falling out is the same thing as hair loss....
so then yes it does cause hair loss right?

That is nonsense...

lol@lirion also...

<< Depends on how much you use. If you put enough on then no hair can fall out. >>

i've heard about it clogging the pores, but what do i know...

i don't use it anyway, so it doesn't affect me 😀

I've never seen scientific proof to back that up. If you're worried about hair loss look at your father or your grandfather - see if they still have a full head of hair or not

From what I have heard, hair gel (alcohol free) is perfectly fine for your hair.

Hairspray is the bad one for hair loss, as it basically just lacquers your entire head and plugs things up real good.

Your hair follicles getting no oxygen is a very bad thing. (read: hair falls out)

Hair loss in males is not inherited from their fathers, it's inherited from their mothers, who inherit it from THEIR fathers. So look at your maternal grandfather, or your grandmother's father. (Or if your mother is balding, you're DEFINITELY going to go bald if you're male.) Even though if your grandfather or great-grandfather are balding, that doesn't mean you WILL go bald, it means you have a 50/50 chance of having inherited the genes for baldness.

there might be a connection between the immune system and hair loss. but as of
today the suspected agents are male hormones, testosterone and dihydrotestosterone.
stress can cause temporary diffuse hair loss.

i think gels are okay as long as you apply it to the hair only, and not rub it all over your scalp. the thing to worry about is clogging your pores.
i'm 50/50 but i figure by the time i start balding they will have nice hair transferring technologies or maybe they will be able to grow my hair in some laboratory and stick it on my scalp 🙂

<< Hair loss in males is not inherited from their fathers, it's inherited from their mothers, who inherit it from THEIR fathers. >>

that is a myth.

from hairloss.com:
"While many people believed until recently that you received this genetic message through your mother and that you would eventually lose hair in the same way her father did, it is now accepted that baldness genes are passed down from both sides of the family. This trait can skip generations and it may not even affect siblings in the same way."

The genes for whether or not you'll lose your hair (at least as far as "male pattern baldness", perhaps not some other causes of baldness) are carried on the X chromosome. Since males don't inherit an X chromosome from their fathers, whatever genes they get from their mother are dominant. If the maternal grandfather is balding, then the mother inherited at least one "bald" X chromosome, so her sons have a 50/50 chance of getting it.
