Whoa!!! This American Airlines flight from San Antonio to Los Angeles encountered an intense thunderstorm last night while in West Texas. It had to make an emergency landing in El Paso. I can see why. The nose of the plane should not look like that.

thanks for the clarification

Hard to tell how messed up the wing is from that picture. My co-workers approve aerodynamic repairs for airlines, and I've seen dome pretty messed up leading edges from hail. The nosecone loss isn't a big deal.

Damn. Wonder if that messes up the radar and other sensors that are in there. Would make instrument landing much harder if everything is dead or out of cal.

Why do pilots try to thread the needle like this? I'd very much prefer being in the air for an extra hour if it meant safely avoiding the storms...

There aren't any other sensors in the nose that I know of, certainly not relating to safety. I'm sure the radar was messed up, but a failure in flight probably isn't a big deal.

Interesting how there appears to be more damage on the planes left side. At least to the wing and engine although it could be just the lighting.

The pilot probably had a hot date lined up in the destination city and couldn't wait so he didn't change course. Now he's stuck not getting laid and with a pretty bad mark in his performance review.

Tell me again why pilots don't have vows of celibacy?

In fairness I'd want to get out of San Antonio and to LA pretty bad myself...
