Hail damage...I need help!

My house got waylaid by hail. Once side of the siding needs replacing, along with fascia and the roof.

The insurance company gave me the following
Roof: 28 SQ @ $105 = $2490 - 50% depreciation = 1470
This is for a new layer only.

If I do the tear off, they will pay another $1754

Siding 308 SF @ 3.10 = $954.80
The estimator said he needs 400sf. Measured it is at least 330sf.

Fascia 80 lf @ $3 = $240

So anyhow, the first contractor comes over, practically a used car salesman. Takes 1.5 hours, wants my business that night. Of course I sent him on his way. Here was his quote:

Roof, if I do the tear off $5,642
Siding & Fascia $1522 (some uber 3rd generation vinyl siding he claims).

Who's trying to screw me worse, insurance or the contractor, and how the heck to get get either side to be honest? Google isn't helping with any good sites. Help!

50% depreciation? Never heard of that. Re-read your insurance policy. Sounds like they're trying to be the first party to screw you.

Can't help you with what a bid should be. Get several bids from contractors and GET REFERENCES!

I have a feeling that this is a topic that 14 year old computer geeks yearning for someone to touch their special place will have difficulty relating to or answering.. Maybe if you call the company anonymously you can get some questions answered?

??

Isn't that the whole point though? Seems like they would make it easy.. hmm...

Remind me to research homeowners insurance before I buy a house. 😛

Silly me I switched from state farm to country companies to save a few buck 🙁 It shows in their service.

I understand the depreciation part, I've filed a fire claim before. What I don't understand is why I don't get the decpreciation reimbursed if I replace it 🙁 I'll call and annoy the insurance company tomorrow. I was just stunned at the price difference between the payout and the estimate. This is a big contractor too...not some shady gypsies. Or maybe it is just gypsies who hit it big.

You always have some type of hassle. Whether it is the deductible, the claim or whatever.
