I'm at the library and this 16 yr old girl sat down next to me and started doing her search.

She went to www.ask.com and literally "asked."

She typed,

Where can I buy the book, "My little blah blah blah" for a cheap price?"

It got her the right results but such casual use of the internet made me smile a bit....

I would've just googled simply typing the author's name and title...

You don't call that savvy? She used the internet and got what she wanted rather quickly from the looks of things. I call that effective at the very least.

Yeah, usually people who don't understand the simple concepts of search engine techniques use Ask.com. It works for them so I don't try to teach them other ways.

I used to interview askjeeves. It was fun. I think I've still got some screenshots at home of humorous responses to questions.

A true geek would have done all this though the command line connecting to IPs (bah who needs DNS)

Exactly. Altavista.com used to do searches in exactly that way - you'd ask it a question, and your search results would vary based on how your phrased the question. I often search that way using google for something I can't find easily with a simple search, because it's pretty likely someone else has asked the same question on an Internet forum somewhere and has gotten useful responses.

Do any of the current search engines work that way anymore? I was wondering that the other day when I was looking for an answer to something and was thinking "It would be much more efficient if I could just ask the damned question." Not often that I need it, but it would be handy.

my girlfriend is like that. She doesn't understand that search engines use keywords, so she will ask Google questions like that. I try to teach her to use simple keywords that would be used to describe what she is looking for, but she just doesn't seem to grasp it. And she never looks past the first page of results either.
