This is my breakdown on your typical Tahoe 2wd LS. So no, my last quote was
not MSRP, it was my cost. I will sell you any Tahoe I have on my lot for
cost.

Tyler, you are going to have to do better than that. At a minimum, I would
utilize the GM Supplier Discount, but Ford has already quoted me a price on
an Expedition at an amount less than their X-Plan price. I would hope you
would be able to provide a similar incentive.

Sorry, I am all out.

We had been corresponding for a couple of weeks and started to discuss price after he finally got a feel for what I was looking for.

Is the auto business good enough that he doesn't care about pissing off a prospective customer or did I step over the line?

Must be new. He should have told you anything in order to get you into the store, so they could bait and switch you

You can't step over a line that was never drawn, they want your business, let them kiss your as to get it, remember, they are after your money and nothing else.

i don't think from what he wrote that you stepped over the line. My friend is recently employed at a car dealership and he has a limit as to how much he can sell a car for. Example if a car's MSRP is 45 they sell it for 50 as a newbie they tell him he can only take off $2000 for example, its prolly more than that but you get my point.

I think this guy just couldn't take anymore off

How did he piss you off? Just because he didn't come down any more?

He might have assumed you're not a serious buyer. Have you ever been there in person?

I dont think he did anythign to piss you off..basically he told you sorry that my best offer..at least he isnt wasting your time bringing you in dickign you around trying to convince you to go higher.

There are a number or things that could have prompted his response like....
1. he honestly cant go lower.
2. he doesnt think your serious

No I haven't yet, and I guess I'm not really pissed off. I just thought his answer was pretty terse and could have been done much better. We had been corresponding for at least three weeks, getting the vehicle detail down and then when I argue the price, just once, he abruptly ends our conversation. At least he could have said, "look that's the best I can do, take it or leave it". But no, he is basically saying "F - Off"

How can he not think I am serious? I gave him exactly what I wanted. For him to say that he can only go to invoice price is hogwash, because the GM supplier discount is less than that, and he wouldn't even qoute me it. I think the guy got upset because he couldn't jack me around.

I think the salesman felt that after 3 weeks, he hasn't gotten you into the dealership once and on top of that, you gave him a price way below his minimum. To him, that's three weeks with little or no possibility of a sale so he just bugged out?

That's my take.

I think the guy got upset because he couldn't jack me around.
Well, I'm sure he'd be in a better position with the dealership with a lost sale instead of a loss sale.

Using the GM Supplier Discount shouldn't result in a loss sale, otherwise it wouldn't be offered. But I see you point, I just didn't want to spend three hours at a car dealership if they couldn't deliver what I wanted.

Car salesmen suck but I love playing the game with them.....took me over a month to make the deal on my 2000 Durango when I bought it back in January of 2000....I think I finally just wore the poor schmuck down to the point where he finally called and agreed to the price I told him I would pay 5 weeks earlier. My favorite part of all our wheeling and dealings was the day before he agreed to my price. I was in his office and he was going on and on about how he was giving me his best price, how if he sold it for any less he wouldn't be making any money, that it wasn't about the money for him but he "had to take care of his family and they were barely getting by." At that instant I pointed to a picture he had hanging on his wall from the previous, 1999, Christmas where he was in the yard with his twin daughters and they had brand new identical Dodge Dakotas with big red ribbons on them and said "looks like you're doing ok to me.", then walked out of his office. He chased me down and tried to get me not to leave. The next morning he called me at work and said we had a deal for my original price. I went in to sign the paperwork, check in hand, and when they gave me the forms they had included shipping charges lot charges, and something called a dealer's fee which I told them from the very beginning I would not pay. I pointed those out to them and said I wanted the charges removed. The new car manager started a song and dance about how he had to charge me. I got up and started to walk out but the salesman stopped me and told the manager "you won't win with this one, just redo the paperwork." They did and took the charges off. 45 minutes later I drove off the lot with my Durango.

Da*n. You guys ought to write a "buying a new car" FAQ. What are all these discounts you are talking about?

Dealers piss me off. High pressure tactics, cars where prices are not clearly market, and lots of nebulous "we want to deal" without any willingness to be up front about price. And when you do talk price you find out they are $2K above blue book on car that isn't in very good shape to begin with.

All of the dealers we went to immediately wanted to know our budget. Yeah right. I'll just open up my wallet and you take out what's fair.

Sorry, I am all out.

I think that was a simply an attempt at humor with regard to your use of a Ford product in trying to gain an additional discount: He's all out of Expeditions. ;)

My dad did the bargaining for me. Got me a 01 Astro NEW for 18K. MSRP was 23K. I see GM makes mad money on products... freak GM. I went to a Toyota dealership, guy saw me looking at a Corolla LE.. 15K stock. I said I'll be back tomorrow, talk to same guy. Price is 16.5K. WTH, ohh "the car is very popular, weve been getting orders left and right, this is your only chance to get one in 2 months" WTH I'm like.. Okay 1,500 more no prob. But I wanted CD/cassette radiio instead... +600.... I said... hmm I'm looking for a manual anyway... so I said "The transmission is gonna be manual right?" he replied "no, its auto, manual is $500 extra" I walked out, then and there. I get a phone call 2 days later from him. I kindly refused. freakin COROLLA gonna be $18000. I would have gotten a Camry for that price. Dealers SUCK. I wont buy another car from them. I like Carsdirect.com now.

Probably will, though Ford dealers have some deals that are even better than the X-Plan. 8K off of a '03 Expedition. Can't beat that with X-Plan.
