Theres a few guys out here in the desert who just ordered new Jordan tennis shoes. Its not like we wear civilian clothes all that much out here, and who are they trying to impress with style. Theres a handful of females, all nasty. Anyways.. just had to chuckle when I heard them talking.

I thought you guys basically had disposable income anyways, since housing, foods, health is all taken care of.

A good pair of shoes are well worth the investment.

But yes, expensive sneakers in the desert does seem a bit ridiculous.

I'll pay $100 and more for a good pair of gore-tex boots, but I stopped paying $150 for a pair of pointless basketball shoes in middle school...

Not necessarily true. Shoes that cost that little aren't always the most comfortable for standing or walking large amounts. Some are sure, but some aren't. I paid ~80 for my boots that I wear anytime it's not sandal weather, and that was in 1997. Sometimes I can actually forget that I'm wearing them.
And they're certainly not a waste of money.

I'm glad work reimburses us for work boots. I bought some a while back for field duties. My shoes are junk though... there's a hole in the sole and I get soakers if I step in a puddle. My wife keeps nagging at me to buy new ones, but I just put my foot inside of a Ziploc freezer bag and then in the shoe. If this isn't the definition of cheap, I don't know what is. Honestly though, I just don't feel like going to get new ones. I told the wife to, and she said they had no size 11s because it is apparently the most common size.

I personally like to spend a little more on shoes, certainly won't pay more than $100 though... but a good pair of shoes are more comfortable, especially if you're doing anything active (if you're running, it pays to have a good pair of running shoes, and not just any pair of crosstrainers).

Besides, a pair of shoes lasts me several years (but i have several pairs, and i don't wear the same ones each time).

Not always true. I paid 140 for my Dr. Martins, but I've had them for like 4 years. But money on sneakers in the desert is stupid.

And yes, we do have a decent amount of money stockpiling, and these national guard guys make a CRAPLOAD more then us active duty guys so they have more. I make roughly 2100 a month out here as an E-4. An E-3 with the nasty guard makes about 3000 a month. Theres some higher ranking NG that are making near 80k a year.

But why does everything have to be functional or have to impress others? Why ca'nt somebody buy something that they just inherently find 'fun'?

I usually get the "your shirt is wrinkley" comment. Granted, I usually dress kinda nice, but I hate overdoing it. I really dont wanna be the best dressed. To expensive, and not worth it at all.
