My original round trip ticket price was only $120 and they want to charge me an additional $800 to change my flight to one of four earlier flights that are all wide open.

Why didn't you book either of those in the first place?

What a stupid question.

Maybe he gets off work a few hours earlier and would prefer a few extra hours at his destination. Whatever the reason, it's completely irrelevant to the discussion about the ridiculous amount he is saying he would be charged to make the change.

The entire day of meetings that were scheduled were canceled. Instead of leaving around 4pm I wanted to try to leave at 7am, 9am, 11am or 2pm. All of which would be $800+ to change to and all had plenty of availability according to the Northwest/Delta booking agent.

I might just try to get to the airport early and change flights at the gate. That has worked a couple of times when I have tried it.

I've never had a problem switching to an earlier flight at the gate.

For Delta (and now Northwest), you can do SDC (same day confirmed) which gives you a confirmed seat on a flight for $50. You can only do SDC within 3 hours of the flight, but if it's as wide open as you say, you'll be fine.

wow, just flew delta last week. missed my 3PM flight, showed up at the airport 15min before boarding the 5:50AM flight the next morning, didn't even have to pay a fee (not even for my 1 checked bag) Moline IL...I guess there is an advantage to a boondocks airport

I never tried this until recently, my first time flying Southwest. I was ~4 hours early for my flight from Vegas to Chicago, and saw if they could put me on an earlier flight. The only thing they could do was put me on a flight which went through Kansas City for an additional $260. My flight back was packed which may have had something to do with it, I don't know.

If your original ticket is $120, what would it cost to just book a new ticket?

yup!

We had to change dates on our flights to london, from paris...it was 150$ PER set of tickets, so the two of us paid 300$ together..not BAD, but it sucked.

I had to go to New Jersey for work (wouldn't go there voluntarily), and got done with my work early. Checked with U.S. Airways if I could switch my flight to an earlier flight.. Was quoted ~$600 to do the change. But if they CANCELLED my return trip and booked me a new ticket it was $99..

I thought about that as well.

Their one-way fare is $700.

A new round trip ticket with an earlier flight is only about $210 *however* when I asked them if I could just book that flight as well they told me no that if I missed my first leg my entire ticket would be canceled.

My wife does this all the time on NWA. I can't believe she pays anything at all given that she has to keep within a strict company budget. Maybe, because she is some sort of Platinum member?? I know that Platinum member status keeps her from having to pay for overweight bags.

Gold and platinum members do not have to pay for same day confirmed on Delta/NW. They do have to pay the change fee/fare difference if it's not within the SDC window.

That because their policy to change a flight is a fee of $75 per ticket + price difference of the ticket you are changing to. The longer you wait the the higher the tickets will go up so.

You have three choices in this situation:
1. Pay SDC fare at home/online/over the phone, so that you have a guarantee seat when you arrive at airport
2. Show up at airport, fly standby for free (which is what I always do)..not guaranteed though
3. Pay change fee for a new ticket - last minute fare + penalty

Actually Southwest is worse than the main-line carriers in this situation. I love Southwest, they do not charge any cancellation fees/rebooking fees, which is what makes it my favorite airline. If you cancel a nonrefundable ticket, you get every penny in credit for a future flight within the year, which is never a problem for me to use up :) Southwest will even let you "change" to the same flight, if it drops in price, and you get to "pocket" (as credit) the fare difference for a future flight.

HOWEVER, Southwest does NOT allow you to fly standby/SDC. Southwest will let you change to an earlier flight, but you must pay the last minute cost of the ticket, which often times is multiple times the original price. I'm not familiar with JetBlue.

Airlines like Northwest make their profit by squeezing the last minute business travel. If they change the ticket now, they are potentially losing out on selling a high $$$ tickets. It does not matter if they have 90 seats available.. they have their eyes on the prize.

Ahh, I miss the good ol' days of flying. Back in the mid '90s my family took a vacation to hawaii and we were hopping on a flight from one island to the next. We were already checked in and going to board a flight in an hour. One flight was currently boarding to the same place, so we asked if we could hop on that one, they just said "sure" and waved us in. No paperwork or anything. The paranoia today just makes flying not any fun at all.
