Uhh yeaah.. Just got news from my mom that the transmission FAILED on our '98 VW Beetle. Yeah, failed.

Estimated repair cost: $3500.00

Edmunds TMV: around 6k or 7k

I have heard that '98 VW Beetles have been problematic. Class action lawsuit, anyone?

Secondly, to replace the car we're going to be buying a Subaru.. Probably an Impreza (2001, 2002) or a Legacy [GT?] (2000, 2001, 2002). Thoughts on these cars? AWD is basically a necessity for living in Maine. Subaru seems to fit the bill.

Legacy Outback or GT (just to get the 165 HP engine, not the one with only 135). Imprezzas are too darn small for what they cost. My insurance company (allstate) rates Imprezzas as a higher risk than Legacies, and yours may too, so that's a cost factor to consider.

'98 New Beetle in good working order, $6,000? Wow, that's getting down toward domestic car resale value. I guess the veil is falling (yet again) from VW. They had a second coming here in the US, but the honeymoon is over and reality is setting in again. VW changed public perception, but not the cars. Those Golf-based VWs are still POSs.

We took it to a local garage. The dealer is a crook. We dealt with him for a while, but then stopped. They have horrible customer service, and are just generally jackasses.

The car has about 98,000 miles on it.

Yes, Skoorb, you're right. We've owned four (before we bought the VW), and they all kicked as$. Personally, I'm excited as fvck to go get a new car. We're considering: Forester (2.5XS), Impreza (Wagon and Sedan, WRX and 2.5RS/TS), Legacy (GT, SE) and uhh.. I think that's it. I hope we go with the Legacy GT. That thing is pretty. Well, unless we get the WRX. Daaamn...

Avoid the MY02 WRX. They had transmission and clutch problems in the 5MT. 4EAT is rock solid but (IMO) not the right choice in a driver's car like the WRX. The MY03 WRX has no problems. Do NOT believe the stories about body and frame integrity problems in the Impreza. Mine has 7500 miles on it now and it is the most rigid and rattle-free car I have ever owned. This is my first Subaru and it is a great ride. I can't say enough nice things about it.
Look for something with the 2.5L engine if you don't go WRX.

Come to think of it yeah $3500 for a new tranny when it's a manual is a DAMN lot of money.

Consumerreports couple years back was randy as hell for the reliability of Subaru. My mother has owned 3. The first basically fell apart at 40,000 km but that's the fault of myself and my older brother. We treated it like a piece of junk and drove it HARD. I mean REALLY HARD.

The last two have been awesome.

Haha nice. Yeah I think me and my bro drove the Beetle a bit hard.. Still, the tranny shouldnt have just failed. We found a used tranny with 10k miles on it. The shop can buy, do the job, etc for 2100.00. We've ordered that.

Get an older Land Rover - Those things are indestructible.

I thought they already had one, like a '67 or something. That's reportedly a POS too.

I think they're on to something good by deciding to switch back to Subaru.

Thoes problems have been addressed in a recent Technical Service Bulletin. The clutch shudder is recognized as a manufacturing defect.

I just bought a 2004 impreza 2.5ts, it's very nice.

$3500?! I just had my automatic tranny rebuilt with all kinds of heavy duty parts for $1200 installed. You are getting ripped. I suggest getting another place to do the work. Even with a FWD car, installing a tranny should not be that much.
