So my little sister asks me to look at her BF's family computer as is has problems and will not "work" anymore.

I take a look at it and run the trend micro free scanner and I can disable enough things to get it to do that. 3 hours later over 5000+ infected files. Lots of viruses, Trojans, ad aware, malware, greyware. Pretty much has everything. So just for fun I click the FIX NOW button.

Estimated time till finished (it has been running for an hour) 24 1/2 days......haha.

I told him he should just wipe it and start over.

Oh yea maybe I should say something to my sister about this guys family browsing habits. :( I wasn't even snooping but as the file names go buy on the virus scan no one in their right mind would have files named that for fun....

you mean give them a pen and paper and some stamps? Nothing is idiot proof.

Why are people on this forum always intentionally dense/obtuse just to make a weak-ass point? Either you know what he meant and you're intentionally being a dick about it, or you didn't get what he was implying in which case you have zero social skills. Sorry about the OT rant but this is something that has bothered me about people on this forum for some time.

Just in case you really are that dense, I'll spell it out for you. He meant installing Firefox (probably with NoScript), a good working anti-virus app (AVG) and either running Vista, or running XP with a non-admin account (assuming it's a PC).

My aunt uses the internet almost solely for e-mail and occasionally ordering Birkenstocks... I ran Seek & Destroy on her computer because it was running slow, and it turned up over 7,000 infected files. I have absolutely no idea how... it's not like she's the type to browse pr0n or warez.

Malware can DIAF.

An idiot would put the stamps on his eyes and proceed to stab himself with the pen.

:D

I had the same happen yesterday on my mom's pc. She had 30 different viruses, and 3 root kits. I didn't have time to totally fix it though, because I was on my way to the zoo, and thought I could just pop in. I'm thinking I'll just wipe it. It will probably take up less time.

Schadenfroh made a very nice automated package that's relatively quick (run it overnight) and with pretty darn good detection/removal capabilities. It won't wipe everything, but at the very least it will make the computer usable without wiping it.
