Haha, just assimilated a whole computer lab (30+ PCS!)... please answer a few questions...

I talked to my teacher, and he gave me the OK to install SETI!

So basically, I'm going to come in before school starts, and start assimliating ASAP. There are around 30-40 computers in the lab. All around 400mhz I believe.

My friend who runs seti with me under my account, will also talk to his other teacher, and talk about assimliating that lab! So hopefully everything goes well! I figure 1 computer lab is good enough for now!

Now, I have a few questions before the assimlations begin.

Operating System = Windows 98

What is a quick way to install all the clients on the PCs?

I want to make sure SETI starts up with every log in, due to several different accounts going on PC each day. How can I make sure SETI starts up with every log in? Will the Start menu work?

Since this is a public school, how can I make sure kids cannot mess with SETI? I would like a program, where messing with SETI is not allowed without a password or some sort, but will still continue running constantly. Will something like SETI Hide do this? If the password thing is no possible, what can I do to prevent kids from messing with it?

The computers already have a program which restricts certain access to certain parts of a computer, so I'm not worried about deletion, just... kids messing with SETI itself.

Now, I'm not sure how fast these PCs are, but I remember checking the BIO a couple times because I was bored.... Assuming under constant usage (MS Word, Powerpoint, Typing programs, surfing the web), how fast would a 400mhz pentium2 crunch seti? How about a 400mhz Celeron? I'll find out the real specs on these PCs later...

Is there anything else I need to know about mass assimilations?

Thanks!!

Woah... Not sure I can answer any questions but Woah.... 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀

Speed doesnt matter, they'll do perhaps 1.5 a day (IIRC) at worst case, assuming they are crunching 24 hours a day. That makes a lot of WUs and is nothing to be sniffed at!!

Important - Are they networked? We shouldnt assume anything at this stage.

Not sure if the FlexInstaller works on 98 or not...I'm sure someone will pipe in with info on that.

As for the times...I had a PII-350 that took about 18-19hrs per WU on average.

ha ha nice actaeon
i tried this at my school too but they said no so i tried too hax the machines

they have some version of novell on all machines

i can install seti cli and stuff but if the machine is rebooted seti is completely gone

also i tried too be mr.smarty and i installed seti CLI as a service on 3 machines
rebooted them and guess what POOF GONE!

its good for you and the team that you got 30 machines but bad for me =P

im betting you'll average 25-30 units per day from those machine due too people goofing with them... turning on off ect

From what I understand, these computers will not be running 24/7 unfortunatly. And will not be running weekends.

They will run maybe around.... 6 hours each day, assuming you take in the log off time, lunch, etc etc....

And yes, they are all networked to the schools T1, or whatever we have. A constant internet connection.

Hrm, they do have a version of novell on all the machines, which I believe is for logging in and out.

I already got permission from the teacher, so he can log me under an higher account (one that is not restricted), and hopefully everything will run fine, and will not have any of those deletion problems you had.

Dude! our MTR TeAm will dominate with all those new WU's, TeAm #4 0wnz j00! 😛

I really don't think I'll see a 20+ WU a day boost... but rather.. when everything averages out and settles down, I think maybe around an extra 10 or so a day, assuming it would take about 3 days for a WU to complete. That would boost my average to almost 25 a day.

I do not believe that the Flexinstaller works well with Win98. You probably will want to get a service install and visit each machine. It shouldn't take too long. Good Luck 🙂

Is that my teammate "Actaeon" talking about a computer lab? :Q 😀

Why don't you use SetiHide. You can tell it to hide the icon and there will be nothing showing in the tray. You would however have to put it in the Startup Folder where the students will find it. One trick to deter them is to rename SetiHide. Call it something that sounds like it better not be messed with ......."CriticalDrivers" .............. or something like that. 😉

PM me and I'll help you. 🙂

"we are running Novell v3.31, Networked on the T1 we have at school but also connected to the whole county (of course). From what I understand, we need an Admin to install seti as a defult program running from the SERVER (and not each machine) so when a machine gets turned on and logged in, it will run seti by defult. "

My friend said that...

I disagree with him. I do not believe that would be possible, and even so, we would not have that kind of access to the schools server. He wanted me to post it here....

As far as SETIHide, I'd like to actually check up on the PCs also, I want it available to my viewing... not 100% gone, and unaccessable.

Good point... but since each computer has program already installed and running during log in, which restricts access (can't get into my computer, cannot run regedit, can't even right click on the desktop..), so I think i'll be safe from that.

I wonder what Kind of case mod I want... Hrm... 😀 😀 😀

Oh, I forgot, um... my e-mail account in which SETI runs on... the service shut down.

Is there anyway to retrieve my password?

To see the status of each machine, while at the machine, all you have to do is:

[ invisible ] - SetiHide is run in "stealth mode." This mode creates a file "setihide_is_hidden.txt" inside the ..\files\ directroy. Delete this file to display the SetiHide window. Minimizing SetiHide will re-hide it and re-create "setihide_is_hidden.txt".

And I may have been wrong when I said you would have to put it in the Startup Folder. That is the case with WindowsXP but with Windows98 you can use the auto-start mode.

2.1 "Run SetiHide on Windows startup" [ yes | no | run, launch SETI client and exit ] (Supported on Win95/Win98/WinME only at this time. Next version will come in two flavours, one will be a service for WinNT/Win2K/WinXP. Currently, SetiHide.exe can be placed in the startup folder. Note that SetiHide was succesfully tested with AppToService!)

[ yes ] - Launch SetiHide when Windows starts or a new user logs on.

Okay, but under my normal student account, I do have not have access to delete this file. I could always ask him to log in for me if I wanted to check.... or just give me a "higher" account....

Like I said earlier, I lost my password... anyway to retrieve it?

Oh, and another thing.... anyway I can check the status of all the PCs running my account seti from my home machine, or the machine I use at school?

Thanks

😎 SWEET !!! 😎

With BBR on our heals all the time, this is the best news I've heard in quite a while!

We definitely need you dood!! 😀

Password problem seems to be.... not a problem. At least, not a major one, that would prevent me from using these PCs... 😀 😀

Slpeenus: Muahaha...

I hope I get at least 10WU a day from this lab... I just wish the PCs wern't so darn slow!

Now, the real questions at hand...

Okay, to prevent people from messing with SETI, I will use SETI Hide...

Now.....

What would be the fastest way to install SETI on all these PCs?

Should I use something like SETI Queue (And how would I set this up?)?

How long does it take before these little buggers finish a WU? I believe they are a 400mhz Pentium2/Celeron, with casual usage.

With regards to "fastest way to set it up" hopefully gimme a couple of hours and i'll have a "service" install for Win9x that you just double click on a BAT file in a directory/A: 🙂

This is in relation to why Spleenus was doing his attempted evil laugh!

😀 <----- YWEG 😉

well, I repeat my attempted evil laugh with..

muhahahahaaaaaa...

10WU's won't be enuf to fend off... the might of BBBBBBBB..........BBBBBBBBB.....RRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...

The British Bulldog Racers naturally 😀

This is a 400 MHz system. The average CPU is 13 hours 22 minutes. 😉

Actaeon, PM me with email address and i'll send ya over a couple of files that might help 🙂

Spleenus is gonna test it out tomorrow 🙂
