We've had Yoda for about two years. He has shown some signs of aggresion towards kids that werent our son and snapped, but never bit.

Last night a kid rang the doorbell and usually we put the dogs out before we answer but my son opened the door and Yoda went after the kid at the door. My son grabbed the dog to stop him from biting the other kid and ended up getting bit on the arm and chest.

Didn't want to do it, but everyone I've talked to said it was the right thing to do as there is a chance he could do it again perhaps to someone elses kid.

Putting to sleep a dog we've had for two years that was mainly my wife and son's dog made me realize how hard it is going to be to put my dog Molly to sleep when it's time. She's a 12 year old lab i've had since she was a puppy.

Putting down an animal is always tough. They really don't know any better and are just being who they are. It's really sad, but everybody is generally always better off when it happens. I can't imagine having to do it to my dog. Just thinking about it makes me sad.

Thanks everyone. It does suck, never had to do it before. We had two greyhounds when I was in middle school/high school and was in the military for a few years by the time they were put to sleep so I didnt have to experience it first hand.

I kind of think the sooner we get another puppy the better. For one, my dog at 12 needs a companion. I swear when we got Yoda she seemed like she was 5 years younger all of the sudden. Two, I think it'll help my son get over it sooner.

That is really hard, we had a similar experience with our cockerspaniel growing up. She was about 2 years as well and was not properly socialized.

My friend came over one day, and the dog got out of the basement and bit his ear pretty bad. We went out, and when I came home my parents already took the dog to the vet.

It was a really rough week, and I didn't understand why they did it at the time.

That's a shitty situation to be in but you did what you had to do. If it makes you feel any better there are tons of unwanted dogs in shelters and rescues, and if you take another one in you'll be saving a dog's life.

I'm not sure it's legal in Canada to put a dog to sleep for that unless there's a court order.

STFU dude. We get it, Canada sucks so you can stop telling us. Some of us here like Canada and don't appreciate all your negativity towards Canadians.

He's in Manitoba, so no wonder he hates Canada.

had to do the same thing a few months ago Yoda. One of the toughest things I've had to do. I also posted about it. Be prepared, some folks here now consider you a murderer.

I had to do the same thing to my Lab/Chow 12 days ago.:'( She lived to 15 1/2 and I got to see the natural ageing progression, and knew when to let her go.

A sudden, unexpected death of a pet is much harder to handle emotionally.:(

Best wishes.

Was very hard to do. I am glad that I did it yesterday right after it happened though. I'd hate to sleep on it and start having second thoughts and then be convinced not to do it, only to have him bite my son again except worse or someone else's child. That would be even harder to deal with, knowing he bit my son twice in one shot and not doing anything about it only to have him do it again.

Sorry to hear that. But I can't help but wonder if you were dominant enough with consistent correction & discipline, his aggression could've been fixed rather easily.

Dogs are aggressive when they think they're alpha.

It's the place where dreams go to get put to sleep.

It always sucks when you have to put a beloved pet down. First time I ever saw my dad cry was when we had to do it to my dog. He had cancer though. Thankfully he never got vicious. Guess their brain goes as they get older.

Beautiful dog.

It was the right decision. You would regret it even more if the dog were to hurt your son in the future. It's not worth the risk.

My dog, who never bites and loves everybody did once bite a roomate candidate of mine, totally unprovoked. After living with the guy for a few months it became obvious to me that I should have listened to my dog about the guy's character.

Not all dogs are compatible with family/suburban living. Some, in my experience, especially Redbone Hound mixes, thrive on violence. Some have intrinsically violent personalities, others just never get appropriately socialized. There is a private shelter owner and dog behaviorist named Sue Sternberg who claims to have a system to identify dogs with a predisposition for inappropriate aggression at a very young age (weeks). I'm thinking your situation might have been the lack of socialization, especially if the dog had never bitten anyone in the family before. In the future make sure your dog(s) get exposed to bazillions of people in a variety of settings, or just get a golden.

Sorry for the loss, must have been a hard decisions. :( I'm guessing this is after tons of discipline that just never worked out? Sometimes I wish it was easier to let animals know what we want to tell them. Often they just don't understand what's wrong. It's sad really, but guess if he was a danger or potential danger it was the best thing to do.
