lol its all clear now. What about with regular tasks.. ie starting up progs... browsing windows like opening up conrol panel... Should i notice a decrease in performance there?

Ive also noticed my pings behind a router are higher now in cs source... with xp i got in the 90s sometimes when my bros comp wasnt dling anything, the same thing with win 2000 i get pings in the 150 to 250 range... any ideas?? or tweaks i could use to fix this??

I'm guessing that maybe because WinXps ide drivers are written much more aggressively than 2k, so that might be it. If you have a nvidia board, use their ide drivers and hopefully you'll see a preformance increase

edit:

as for your pings..try checking to see (in properties of the ethernet card) if you have it turned for "preformance" or "throughput" and if its on the former, change it to the latter

i read it here a long time ago...not sure if there is any truth...but i can say that winxp loads up a LOT faster than 2k and I remember someone mentioned that as a reason. anyone wanna correct me, go ahead

Isn't it possible for you to borrow another friend's disc if they have one and use your legit XP key? Granted, if your copy was OEM and their's is retail, then you might have a problem, but it's worth a shot. Maybe Microsoft will replace it for a small fee?

I'd check into it before giving up on XP...I've personally come to enjoy the benefits over 2K (although both have their pros) I don't think I could go back.

Microsoft made improvements to the bootup sequence for XP. It has nothing to do with "aggressive" IDE drivers.
