Had oil changed at Sears - now there's a burning oil smell

I know nothing about cars, and I have no tools.

On 3/29 I had the oil changed at Sears (usually get my tires rotated for free). When I got home, I thought I smelled a faint odor of burning oil, but since I park in an apartment garage with a bunch of other cars, and I couldn't localize the smell, I didn't investigate further (yeah, I'm an idiot).

I drove it normally on 3/30. It was raining and I didn't notice any smell, but I wasn't looking for one either.

I didn't drive on 3/31 or 4/1 (Sat and Sunday). On 4/2 it didn't rain and I drove the car. I had my window down and was stopped at a drive-through when noticed the smell of burning oil and saw wisps of smoke coming from under the hood. I checked the dipstick, and the oil level seemed normal. The temperature gauge displayed a normal temperature.

On 4/3 I brought the car back to Sears, but they said they couldn't find anything but claimed that since the oil filter sits "high" (whatever that means  ), they might have spilled oil when they changed it. The mechanic said he cleaned up as much as he could, but he couldn't find anything wrong.

On 4/4 it rained/snowed. I didn't notice any smells.

Today (4/5) I smelled burning oil when I turned on my heater. I popped the hood and saw wisps of smoke coming out from the engine, but I couldn't localize where it was coming from.

I called Sears just now, and they said that I would have to take it to an engine specialist (which I assume means "real" mechanic) to find out what was wrong.

I've never had this problem before, and I've had lots of oil changes done by Sears and other places, but this is the first time that I've gone to this particular Sears Auto Center.

What the heck did they do to my car?

Update: 4/6
The oil cap is screwed on tightly.

I checked the apartment garage and noticed some oil on the ground underneath where the car was. Last night I put some newspaper underneath the car, and sure enough, this morning there was oil on top of the paper (it didn't soak through from below because there were some dry pages in between).

Grrr...I'm supposed to drive 300 miles this weekend. I wonder if any mechanics are working today.

Update 2: Went to the Toyota dealer, and they said it was just a loose filter. I'll check if there's oil on the driveway tomorrow.

They probably spilled a little oil on the engine and now it's just burning off.

Are you noticing any problems driving it? Most likely they just spilled some oil. Takes a few days of driving to get rid of it.

they just got some oil on something when they pulled off the filter, it'll go away

if the oil level is staying the same and you don't get a puddle of oil underneath the car when it is parked, then give it some time to burn off

It's probably just oil on the exhaust.

However, it could that they didn't remove the old seal with the old oil filter. SOmetimes they get stuck to the mating surface. Then they screw on a few filter with a new seal, and two seals together will leak. If you have a Honda CR-V, oil will drip onto the exhaust and start a fire.

The just spilled a little oil on the engine when they changed the filter. Happens all the time, it'll go away... just give it some time to burn off.

Most likely they spilled oil when filling it (slobs hehe) and it ran down the rocker arm cover and puddled on the exhaust manifold so it's burning off as you're driving. It may look and smell serious but it should burn off in an hour or less of driving.

Sounds like spilt oil burning off. Check the levels, but otherwise, I wouldn't worry

Yeah don't wait for the oil light to come on! It's too late if you do.

Because of where my oil filter is on my Sable, I ALWAYS get oil on the exhaust. It takes a few days to cook off.

either that or they forgot to put the cap back on.

I am sure the OP really needed to hear your hyperbole...

how much oil are we talking about?

Either they just spilled some on the engine, the pan plug is a little loose, or the filter isn't tight or still has the old seal stuck in there.

Find anyone who can do an oil change. This should take about 2 minutes to figure out.
