I know nothing about cars, and I have no tools.
On 3/29 I had the oil changed at Sears (usually get my tires rotated for free). When I got home, I thought I smelled a faint odor of burning oil, but since I park in an apartment garage with a bunch of other cars, and I couldn't localize the smell, I didn't investigate further (yeah, I'm an idiot).
I drove it normally on 3/30. It was raining and I didn't notice any smell, but I wasn't looking for one either.
I didn't drive on 3/31 or 4/1 (Sat and Sunday). On 4/2 it didn't rain and I drove the car. I had my window down and was stopped at a drive-through when noticed the smell of burning oil and saw wisps of smoke coming from under the hood. I checked the dipstick, and the oil level seemed normal. The temperature gauge displayed a normal temperature.
On 4/3 I brought the car back to Sears, but they said they couldn't find anything but claimed that since the oil filter sits "high" (whatever that means  ), they might have spilled oil when they changed it. The mechanic said he cleaned up as much as he could, but he couldn't find anything wrong.
On 4/4 it rained/snowed. I didn't notice any smells.
Today (4/5) I smelled burning oil when I turned on my heater. I popped the hood and saw wisps of smoke coming out from the engine, but I couldn't localize where it was coming from.
I called Sears just now, and they said that I would have to take it to an engine specialist (which I assume means "real" mechanic) to find out what was wrong.
I've never had this problem before, and I've had lots of oil changes done by Sears and other places, but this is the first time that I've gone to this particular Sears Auto Center.
What the heck did they do to my car?
Update: 4/6
The oil cap is screwed on tightly.
I checked the apartment garage and noticed some oil on the ground underneath where the car was. Last night I put some newspaper underneath the car, and sure enough, this morning there was oil on top of the paper (it didn't soak through from below because there were some dry pages in between).
Grrr...I'm supposed to drive 300 miles this weekend. I wonder if any mechanics are working today.
Update 2: Went to the Toyota dealer, and they said it was just a loose filter. I'll check if there's oil on the driveway tomorrow.
