Background/semi-rant:

I live in semi-rural Nevada. I like to patronize credit unions, since banks are beholden to shareholders and not depositors.

In the past several weeks, I've come into a modest sum of money. I would like to use it to pay off my truck. I set up the online payment through Capital One and submitted it. I then sent in a check for the payoff interest along with the payoff quote statement (don't ask, Capital One is effed up). Several days later, the payoff interest check cleared, but the major principal online payment was rejected. When I called, Capital One said the financial institution replied to their payment request by saying the account number didn't exist. Well, the credit union had just done some major "upgrades" to their systems, which resulted in a few days of ATM outages as well, so I attributed it to that. I resubmitted my principal payoff request to Capital One and it went through last week.

I checked my account today and found out that Capital One reversed the payment AGAIN. I called and they said the same thing: the credit union replied that the account didn't exist. Worse yet, since my payoff quote was now more than 10 days old, I owed additional interest on the unpaid principal balance (which I tried to pay TWICE). They wouldn't waive it, since it was supposedly my credit union's issue.

So, I call the credit union. I find out that the the ATM outages were actually a result of my wife's ATM card number being compromised! Hey, thanks for the notice. Luckily there was no suspicious activity. It did suck though, as she's in sales and had her card rejected at a few business lunches. That was pretty embarrassing. They also can't find anything wrong with the account and why Capital One is saying the account doesn't exist. After all, this is the same account that the payoff interest check just cleared from and all my other e-payments on this loan were processed from. They say it's not their fault and they won't give me the $20 to cover the interest that's accrued.

Needless to say, I'm NOT happy.

Cliffs:
Screwed by credit union one too many times
Not happy

I now want a new financial institution. Credit union options are slim-to-none here. Are there any good national/online/regional banks that won't screw you over too bad? Anyone have good experiences with national banks you'd recommend? Anyone from Northern Nevada have ideas?

I've had no problems with JP Morgan Chase, though some co-workers of mine have hated them. I love the no-fee United Mileage Plus *debit* card they offer.

I've also had relatively few problems with Wells Fargo, but that's likely because I only have student loans and a credit card with them; not much can go wrong (knock on wood).

My main complaint with the two is the total lack of decent savings options for people with low balances; I unfortunately don't have tens of thousands of dollars to deposit to get a decent interest rate, so I'm still shopping around for a good home for my savings account.

I actually like BofA. Unlike morons who never monitor their balance and complain about overdrafts (read: my roommate), I've never been charged a fee for...anything. Imagine my surprise when I used my card in Canada at a Scotiabank ATM with no fees or surcharges. BofA FTW.

It's not your bank, it's Crapital One, they did the same thing to me. Every other bank works fine, just not Crapital One, turns out I needed to add -00 or something to the end of my bank's account number. Crapital One told me the exact same reason and when I called my bank they told me it was Crapital One and to add the -00 (or something like that) to the end of my account number on the Crapital One website for the online payment. After I did that my payment went through with no problem to Crapital One.

This is similar, though with a slight difference.

The account number I have uploaded with Capital One is, technically, wrong. What they have is xxxxxxxxxxx. My account number should be xxxxxxxxxxx2. I uploaded it wrong 5 years ago.

What's different is that my credit union USED to process it with the incorrect account number. When I called and spoke with my personal banker, she said that as of 1/1/09, they are now rejecting any request that doesn't match exactly. They used to match them by hand but are looking to cut costs. That's fine, I can understand that. However, they should have NOTIFIED ME OF THE CHANGE. That's what's got me so pissed. I asked about the extra interest and the credit union won't cover it since they "can't override someone else's fee". Capital One said "It's not our fault, we just sent what you provided us".

Yes, in hindsight I can see that I made a mistake 5 years ago. What has me so riled up now is that they are not notifying us of any changes they make. I'm especially mad that they didn't notify us of the compromised ATM card, and the fact that we got a PIN for a new card, but no new card!

At this point, I COULD argue that since they didn't notify me of the change to their payment processing procedures, they're bound to honor the old ones and credit me for the interest they cost, but I'm just going to move my accounts instead. I plan on writing a letter of commendation for my personal banker to her boss, and one slamming the credit union to their board of directors.
