Okay, so a coworker had a bag of beef jerky as part of his lunch today (some weird workout diet he's goin on) and he offered me a piece since I'd never had it. I always thought beef jerky was crappy processed meat a.k.a. Slim Jims (they're always next to Slim Jims in the supermarket.) I've had a Slim Jim before (also known as beef fat & lard in a stick) and couldn't stand it. But the jerky was REALLY different!!! Didn't taste fatty at all, in fact it kinda felt like I was chewing a rubber steak (but a tasty rubber steak!) Now I could never eat that crap for lunch, but as a "light" snack it doesn't seem so bad. Plus its a great way to gain protein. The only downside, of course, is that 2 ounces = 50% of your recommended daily intake of sodium and cholesterol! (according to the package.)

So what do y'all think of beef jerky? Has anyone here made their own (either in a smokehouse or in an oven?)

My problem is that it sits in my stomach and doesn't digest sometimes, which makes me violently ill.

Arrested or moved to Mexico? Was it beef he was using or recycled rival druglords?

Beef Jerky is awesome to munch on all day, which keeps you from going dying due to starvation while waiting for lunch. (I used to die all the time at work, 5 hours from when I came in until lunch time, but now things are better)

I'll crunch on either one.

could have been rival druglords... he was always very territorial, and would get very offended when we got our blow from someone else. he was too sensitive, in my opinion. but those amphetamine muffins were the best.

good beef jerkey is made from very lean beef and only has 2-3% fat , it is nearly pure protein and healthy (unless you feel red meat is taboo , i guess)

The key in jerky is the seasoning. Without enough seasoning it looks and tastes like leather. With proper seasoning it can be very, very good. Sodium can be one of the seasonings used, but it doesn't need to be (the sodium often comes from soy sauce). Thus some really good jerky will have much less sodium. As for the cholesterol, it comes with the beef - a 1/2 pound bag of jerky probably started as a 3 pound slab of beef - that is a lot of cholesterol. Real jerky will go rancid if it has any visible pieces of fat. Thus real jerky is nearly 100% fat free (there will always be a little marbleing though). The Slim Jims aren't real jerky as they are only partially dehydrated. There are two kinds of Slim Jims if I remember right - cylinders and long wafers. The cylinders have only a little moisture taken out (thus they need to be kept in plastic wraps to avoid going rancid, they are cheap, and they are moist when you bite into them) - I bet this is what you had in the past. The wafer version has a lot more water removed and taste a lot better. But it still isn't real jerky.

Ahh... Beef Jerky -- one of the great staples of life. I remember getting a 50-pack of beef jerky for my birthday from my Grandpa about 10 years ago. Ummmm... boy!

I am 23! EDIT: I come from a Hindu/Jain family, so the whole 'eating beef' thing kinda happened by accident anyway.

Just so you know, that it probably doesn't have 50% of YOUR recommended daily intake of sodium and cholesterol. Those percentages on the back are based on a 2000 calorie diet, which is probably far less than a 24 yr. old male, who is even remotely active, should be consuming on a daily basis.

Beef Jerky rox! Low in fat, high in protein, can't beat that!

I was going to say that I thought a hunk of Jerky was included in the "Welcome to America" basket you get when you arrive in the US. ;)
