Had another bottle of red wine vinegar packaged in a red wine bottle!

AndrewR

Lifer
Bought some Bourgogne for Thanksgiving, along with a California pinot noir (Anapamu -- really good!) and an Aussie chardonnay, and one of the bottles had a wet cork. The wine wasn't completely vinegar yet (only a 2001), but it was well on its way. :disgust:

I bought two of the same bottle though, and the other one was good but too young. I'll get an exchange on the bad bottle and save its replacement for some time longer to see if it ages to a good flavor. Even young, it was very tasty, but the oafs I had dinner with (some, not all) enjoyed the Turning Leaf and Black Tower more.

Some people... 😉

Wine is an aquired taste. Perhaps the fact that were having even having dinner with you says more about YOUR friends than you give them credit for.
Even the best vineyards turn out, and sell barrels of, crap. Some people like a wine with high sulfites, I , for one, get immediate heartburn from them and NO MATTER what some snob says, it's crap to me if I can't enjoy it.

I'll have a Diet Coke, or Pepsi if that isn't available, thank you very much. If you don't have that, I'll just have water. You can take your bitter wine and pour it on the ground for all I care.

I agree 99% of wine kills me, ill take milk, thansk you very much

and Id rather drink boons then real wine because it tastes good

AndrewR, that sucks.. I don't see why more wine makers aren't using higher-tech bottling for their wines. My dad had to reject a $120 bottle of wine on a cruise once before he even tasted it because of a visibly broken cork. It's funny that the cheaper wines often have better corks that don't crumble as easily.

For you haters:

I just started getting into wine lately.. It's definitely an acquired taste - just like beer, coffee, kimchi..

A beer noob might try three beers and declare that all beers taste the same. A beer appreciater could probby tell most beers blindfolded.

It's just like wine.. Right now, I can't tell too much of a difference between red wines but I am learning. If you don't like wine now, you may at certain times. I never really enjoyed wine until I had it with a nice meal and the wine made everything come together.

A cheap bottle of wine is nasty. A good bottle of wine is better than anything you will ever drink.

Actually, some cheap wine is pretty good...and some expensive wine isn't that great IMHO.

As far as I'm concerned, you're an @sshole -- does that make you happy?

I'll readily admit to being a wine snob because I've invested a lot of time and money in what is essentially a hobby because I enjoy it. What annoys me is when simpleton children like yourself and the friends of our friends don't even bother to attempt to appreciate the fine workmanship of the people who produce these fine drinks, instead insisting on crap that isn't fit to be in the same category of beverage.

Pardon me if self-proclaimed rednecks bother me -- resistance to learning is intellectual complacency. If someone doesn't like something, that's fine, but try it and then decide. Incidentally, one of our good friends had a small glass of the white I opened (a Vouvray), and she said it was fantastic (it was), which explains in part why she's our friend. We don't share much with the others I mentioned previously.

Please, don't start drinking wine. You'll add more demand and drive the prices up, making it more difficult for me.

Or German. :wine:

Haven't had Virginia wine yet. As for German wine, ever tried wines from Alsace, France? I was there last year and had some amazing whites (reds are fundamentally gross -- wrong climate). My trip there changed my opinions of white varietals. I'm still learning French wines so I don't venture too much into other countries. I have yet to crack the biggest wine producer in the world for the most part (Italy). 😉

Like I said in my rant, if you try it and don't like it, then fine. However, I suspect that there's more to wine than you know currently simply because that's what I encounter with most people. Best place to go? A vineyard. Let the vintner introduce you to a wide variety of his or her products. You may be pleasantly surprised -- I was schooled in Alsace last year, and I thought I knew a fair amount about whites. Wrong! A good strategy is to learn what grapes you like, including blends, and then find other ones based on the same grapes. It will lead you down different roads.

It makes sense though because the fine producers are founded on tradition, and it's NOT traditional to use plastic "corks" or screw top bottles. I find that to be heresy. Plus, the better a bottle of wine, the longer it can be aged (VERY generally speaking) so all the more likely that a cork will have deteriorated.

Yes, I admit that the plastic stoppers are superior in technical terms, but I have to think that the cork imparts a certain character which is missing from the antiseptic plastic. Plus, the mere act of opening a bottle is important -- something completely changed by the screw top, best left to cooking wine.

I haven't tried a whole lot yet, and nothing lately. My chick loves wine, so I'm sure I'll get to enjoy some good stuff eventually. 🙂
