Had an electrician come and give me a quote

The project was bringing one new circuit from the breaker box to my second-floor bedroom and adding four outlets on three of the walls. This is a room that currently only has one two-prong outlet in the whole room. Quote came to $425. Considering this isn't work I'd do myself and the price doesn't seem TOO outrageous, I think I'm going to go ahead with it. Think I should?

Only problem is, the quote says "FURNISH AND INSTALL (4) NEW RECEPTACLES WITH (1) NEW CIRCUIT." It says nothing about replacing the one two-prong outlet that's already there, which I DID mention at least twice while the guy was here, don't know why it didn't get included in that description. How much more do you think that one receptacle could up the price? It only needs replaced but grounding would need ran to it.

Make sure the description and EVERYTHING is checked out to HOW YOU WANT IT EXACTLY.

I don't know about the price but as you don't fancy doing it yourself and knowledge/ experience makes you money. I would not try stuff like this if your not too sure and especially with electric...

I agree, that's why I'm hiring someone.

Sigh...makes me mad...I said very clearly twice I think that of course I'd want the pre-existing outlet replaced, too. Why don't people listen... $425's enough, I wonder how much replacing that one outlet with a grounded one will add.

And then I call and he's out till Monday. How ridiculous.

if you are not happy, call another sparky...it is always good to get at least 2 or 3 estimates anyways. Make sure you get the full scope of the work to be done in writing before the work is performed.

$100/ outlet seems to be common...

Not sure if I should call some more or not. That will just take more phone calls and more time, and it seems like this estimate is about right.

But since he didn't include replacing the one receptacle that is already there, how much do you think that could increase the price? Replacing a receptacle isn't a big thing but I'm not sure what's involved in grounding it.

Never mind that. Just make sure the guy is licensed and insured.

receptacles are like a buck fifty each, the rest is labour i guess. *zing*

they're closer to 75 cents each, but he's gotta get the circuit breaker installed in his box and holes cut in the drywall and receptacle boxes installed and wire run through existing drywall

not a bad deal

Glad to see the price appears to be reasonable. But what do you think it'll cost to replace the one existing two-prong outlet with a grounded one? He didn't include that in the description for some reason.

Oh, and not drywall...plaster! House is 57 years old. Is plaster going to be a terrible mess to cut into?

Seems reasonable to me. You might want to think about any other work that you want done because there is economy of scale once you get someone on site.

. add an outside outlet
. add a stairway light
. add a garage circuit

etc....

We actually do have numerous side projects:

making the light work in my ceiling fan that has not worked for awhile
fixing my parents' overheard chandelier in their bedroom that has not worked for awhile
fixing the light over our sink that has not worked for awhile
fixing the light in the stairwell that has not worked for awhile

But, money, money, money. Not sure which of those things we'll ask him to do, also, if any.

can't hurt to ask. seriously, last time i had an electrical work done was to upgrade our service from 60 to 200 amp. the lowest bid came in around 1k, only another 100 or so extra to get them to put in an outside outlet and a light with wall switch on the basement stairs. YMMV of course.
