I was in an accident last week and need to fill out and turn in the accident report. I was traveling westbound and was pulling into a parking lot (turning left into the lot.) The person who hit me was attempting to pull out of the lot (turning left out of the lot.) They must have been looking at the eastbound traffic as they didn't see me, nor did they hear me lay on my horn.

I am pretty sure I have the done the diagram correctly, but I just had a couple of questions.

1) Do I only draw the diagram at the point of impact?

2) They ask to draw a solid line before the impact, and a dotted line after. Since it was such a low speed collision, I don't think the dotted line is needed.

Here is the accident report..

Here is my Gimp rendition of the accident, I think I just need to add lines before the cars showing which direction they were traveling..

Here is the damage to my car, he hit my drivers side rear door and rear quarter panel..

Here is the damage to his van, the plastic broke on his turn signal and left some scuffs on the bumper, not much at all..

Thanks in advance.

Based on the wording in #2, it actually sounds like you should draw the cars at their start positions, preparing to turn left, and then draw a solid line to the impact location. I agree you don't need a dotted line if you both stopped immediately. However, if, when he hit you, your car rotated from the impact, maybe draw that with the dotted line?

That looks like a CPD form. I think you draw the vehicles at the point of impact and if there was significant movement after impact- high speed, spins, etc you draw them again and show the path with the various arrows. In your case I'd draw them once and just the solid line.

Everybody who has been through the dilemma after a traffic accident knows what this is about. Besides having all this trouble and the dents in your car there are many hidden challenges that are coming up on the victim of the accident. Insurance companies, car repair shop, lawyers and courts demand documents, experts reports, bills and receipts, photos and in most cases a sketch of the sequence of events that led to the accident.

Don't give yourself such a hard time: Draw your diagram with just a few mouse clicks from our library of vehicles, roads and traffic signs. Print or send an email of your work straight to your insurance company.

Good eye. This is what I was thinking, I don't know if I spun at all really. He was probably going about 5 MPH and I was going < 10 MPH on the turn.

Where do you think I got the images for the cars in my sketch 😉

But really, that was the first thing I tried using and it was limited in my situation. Sure they have parking lots in there, but they don't have the entrance / exit section that I needed. I said screw it and drew my own with their cars, easier that way.

Anyways, thanks for the help all, I'll convert this into simple sketch form and get this thing mailed off, I only have a couple of days left.

Looks like your car got the worst of the damage. Hard to say what the insurance company will say as to fault. His for pulling out without seeing you and you for turning without seeing someone attempting to pull out. Not sure who would have the right of way, but I would think the traffic on the main road would have it.

It would depend entirely on the intersection controls. (+local and state law)

For example you may be able to assume from gimp that the 4 lane road was a through and the off road was a stop sign. At that point it is Van's fault because that was the control.

3 way stop? Stoplight? May end up equal fault etc.

Well, since the guy who hit me was ticketed for "Failure to Yield" and is being made to get retested to see if he is fit to drive, there is no doubt that it is his fault. He was an elderly man (86) and hard of hearing (had a hearing aid,) the police officer on scene had trouble communicating with him.

It wasn't an intersection. He was pulling out of a parking lot which I was attempting to pull into. There was a stop sign for him, and it was a 4 lane road I was traveling on.

If only one person received a ticket; the insurance company will usually look at that as the one at fault.
