Had a power outage last night and now my computer won't boot into Windows XP

I had a short power outage last night where the electricity turned off and turned back on instantaneously. Unfortunately when my computer restarted I kept getting a black screen saying "A disk error read has occurred. Please press ctrl + alt + delete to restart." So of course I do so but end up at the same screen. I booted into windows from another hard drive and found at least most my data is still intact. Is there a way to correct this problem? I would prefer not to do a fresh windows install since I just barely did it last week. Any suggestions (help!)? TIA

You can boot from the XP CD and choose to do a system restore. If that doesn't get your system back, you can choose repair installation. As a last resort, you can install XP over itself. Your data should still be there.

yes. recovery is beyond the first "recovery console" screen. on that screen just hit enter and on the next screen there will be an instruction to hit R for the recovery installation. works like magic!😀

by the way, you might consider an inexpensive stand-by power supply. i can recommend the belkin models. i have lne that comes with software that will shut down the pc after a period of time that you can set. it's not an expensive one, i got mine at an office supply store on sale for 29.95 or 39.95. i've forgotten. i'm running xp and wouldn't be w/o one ever again. very cheap insurance. also has surge protection for both the power outlets and the modem/phone line.
