The displays listed available to me in the menu bar are 1400x1050@60Hz, 1440x900@75Hz and 1600x1200@60Hz. If I go into the displays pref I can choose the correct resolution (1680x1050) for my monitor, but when it attempts to change I end up with a blue screen. Rebooting gives me the "You need to restart" message. Under 10.5.7 I could change the refresh rate to 60 Hz and then I could use that resolution. But under 10.5.8 this no longer works. Am I destined to stay with 10.5.7 or forced to use a crappy resolution under 10.5.8? I realize all this may change when the new monitors get here, but I still want it to work as it should with my current monitor. Anyone?

Edit: I just tried another resolution listed in the displays menu bar 1600x1200@60Hz and that also produces a blue screen and subsequent restart gives the dreaded restart message. So obviously it is not detecting the display properly even though it lists the correct model number for my monitor.

I'm at 10.5.8 on my UD3P (9800GTX) and am still using 1920x1200@60Hz. The other resolutions available to me are 1600x1000@60 and 1600x1200@60. Since reading your post, I am not going to tempt fate by playing around w/ it, since 1920x1200 is my preferred resolution on my Dell 2407.

But the lack of sound is getting to me. I tried copying over old versions of HDAEnabler, LegacyHDAController and LegacyHDAPlatformDriver to no avail. I've tried it both with and without ACLInject. Since I don't really understand what these kext files do, this is just a crapshoot. But given that I can't find anyone else with 10.5.8 + UD3P + working sound, maybe it goes beyond just replacing the new with the old. Any other ideas?

You may have noticed Kaido's quietness since 10.5.8 became available. I'm sure he is off in the batcave working on the problem (he has 3 systems to come up with an update solution for). You might also check Insanely for a solution, they usually come up with one first over there. As for me, the monitor thing is my primary problem right now, but I will give the sound a look before the end of the day. I have to reinstall again so I can work on it.

OK. I got sound working on 10.5.8 with my UD3P using VoodooHDA.

I found this Thread at InsanelyMac:

I compiled my own - am not sure if the pre-complied kext at google will work or not. I suspect that it will. To compile your own, you will need XCode installed.

These are the steps I followed:

http://www.insanelymac.com/for...iew=findpost&p=1132547

After reboot, I had a bunch of options in the Sound control panel, in addition to the Soundflower ones.

Line Out
Headphones
SPDIF Out

Here is a screenshot

For me, the Line Out works again, and I am happy.

Very good, I just got done trying myself using the Kaido fix for 10.5.7 and it does NOT work. I believe I have a copy of the VoodooHDA.kext on the HQ-A file site so I will give that a shot. Will let you all know if it works or not.

Okay, I have in fact copied the VoodooHDA.kext over and verified it does work. I'm sure if you follow the instructions link in volcs0 post it will produce the same outputs he got, but if you use the generic one like I did you will get a bunch of outputs which don't mean a whole lot to me. It works and that is all I care about so the choice is yours until a more eloquent solution is found. You can find voodooHDA.kext in google, or download it from the HQ-A file section. HTH

Ah ha! Success once again. I think I was close to figuring this out last time, but once it started working I gave up on trying to find out why. The key seems to be (at least for me), Chameleon 2.0. I switched back to the version used on the Uinstaller and now I have 10.5.8 installed on my test partition with a resolution of 1680x1050@60Hz. I do like Chameleon 2.0 a lot better so I will have to find a solution to using it with this setup. If I'm not mistaken, reinstalling it now will allow it to work with the optimal resolution, it just can't be used after updating to the next point update. I feel like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day as I keep reliving this same nightmare over and over and over...

Edit: I went back and installed the new Chameleon 2.0 RC2 and as suspected it works fine. I just have to remember to use the Uinstaller version until I have my system updated before switching back to the new version. I need the new version for dual-booting with Windows. BTW, is it just me, or did the beta version of Win 7 stop being free? I now get the message that my Windows 7 is not genuine and needs to be activated. I thought they gave us until 2010 to mess with this version?

Okay, found the problem on restart/sleep on the UD3P: (thanks to stellarola) Disabling IntelCPUPM causes the problem (Disabler.kext), so the solution is to use a custom-generated DSDT for your board series. I'll work on getting some made for the ES2L, DS3L, and UD3P. I'm not sure if it will be out this week as I'm traveling a lot for work right now, but if I get a few free moments at home, I'll rig em up. I'll also leave a new Disabler as option, if you want to nuke the UpstreamClient kext for older Nvidia cards that have jitter (not sure if that's been fixed in Apple updates or not, my card doesn't have the jitter).

Mine does. It has since like 10.5.6. I hate it. It's been the main reason for me wanting to upgrade.

Some days, these rotten little bugs make me want to buy a real Mac. But then the ADD kicks in and I spend waaaaay too much time trying to figure them out lol. Well, that and my bank account doesn't like the $7.2k checkout figure on the Mac Pro config page at the Apple Store Online ;)

You live for the challenge, and thanks to you, many have amazing 'macs' . Not just will you conquer the bugs, you'll create a solution to make it look easy for the rest of us. We all appreciate it. Just clear you schedule for late september when it gets really exciting!

I made dsdt.aml for my DS3L Rev. 1 with the Snow Leo RTC Patch applied - if anyone is interested in it, please tell me. It didn't fix my sleep issue, though - then again I deleted the AppleCPUPM kext, might be I'm missing that one :-D

Ok, I retreived a matching kext from my macbook and installed it - no I get the dreaded "No HPETs available" Kernel panic from the AppleCPUPowerManagement. I guess the DSDT doesn't have the HPET patch applied to it. I used the command line one so I could edit in the RTC Patch, but it could be that the HPET patch didn't make it into the DSDT file. Hmm. Gotta delete that kext again I'd say

Congratulations! Did you conquer the sleep also?

I dl'd windows 7 a few weeks ago and it had an august date that was the last day you could get it. I don't remember the day unfortunately. It may have come and gone.

I tried the DSDT.aml file from Kaido of an old package from november, my own with the HPET Patch and RTC patch, but I get kernel panics from the AppleCPUPM kext when booting up. I don't understand... I Use Chameleon RC2 which allows for DSDT override. I wish I could get sleep to work

Sleep? We don need no stinkin' sleep! No, I don't use it and could care less if it works or not. As for Win 7, I have mine and I have it installed, but I never got a code to activate it. Now it says it needs to be activated. I tried the MS Live to get one, but that is a joke. It's so messed up I think it will be impossible to get a code before the 2010 cutoff date! Just like everything else MS does, this one is no better.

When I dl'd windows 7 they gave me the activation number. Check that live email, or just dl it again to get the number. When you install it it generates a temporary number and you have 30 days to enter the number they gave you.

And I need the sleep, this way I never shut them down. I did see a fix somewhere but didn't bookmark it. Back to the hunt. I am trying the voodoo kext later.

and btw, i agree with you with the microsoft nonsense. I can't wait to visit a MS store and play with a zune! Should be a freakin thrill

I got back to my hack again and was able to produce a working dsdt.aml - somehow with giving the patcher the correct commandline, to include the new hpetpatch. Now the AppleCPUPowerManagement.kext loads without a problem, but sleep is still a no no. I try another possible fix, to edit the AppleLPC.kext to be able to set certain parameters in the Energy Saver preference panel (Restart automatically after power failure) that have helped others before, but my hopes aren't too high. At least I got the CPUPM to work, even though it didn't help me and the CPU runs a bit hotter now.

Yeah I no longer have that email as I downloaded Win 7 beta when it was first released. That is why I was trying to get on MS live to get another number. It's not a big deal, I don't use it for anything, I have Vista installed also and use it for anything Windows related. I will probably just wait and find a torrent when the full version is released.

I don't shut mine down either, I just turn the monitor off. Good luck in your search. Your comment about the Zune reminds me of the Family Guy episode which mentioned similar, very funny.

Fiddling with the AppleLPC.kext gave me the option I wanted, but didn't fix the sleep issue. I tried VoodooPower alongside with the AppleCPUPM kext, which worked for one or two, but no chance. When it goes to sleep, the fans stay on, the HDs turn off and I have to reset the PC - which most of the time results in a deletion of the BIOS settings. It's very weird and I have no clue, but can't give up. For tonight I go to bed, I asked someone on insanelymac for his dsdt.aml, for he has the same motherboard and claims that his dsdt gave him sleep and a lot of things I accomplish with (if it works) kexts. dsdt files seem to be on their way back, taking over kext files as they come. It would be very neat if they could allow for an even more vanilla install of 10.6. Until then I hope I get sleep to work one day...

Edit:
After fiddling some more today I thought maybe you get a better picture if you see which kexts my system actually uses:

Monitors are here, PCI video card arrived today and as Zaap alluded to, it doesn't work under OS X. Worked fine in Vista. So I ordered this little gem from NewEgg:

http://tinyurl.com/ct6ubk

Not the best solution, but the one which fits my limited budget at the moment. May go with a new complete system in the future, saw some Asus mobos I would like to Hack, but at a minimum by the time you add RAM, case, etc. it would end up costing over twice what I paid for this USB DVI VGA adapter. Who knows, by the time I'm ready for a new system Snow Leopard might be out and we might be talking a Core i7 system by then!

I haven't even unpacked the new monitors yet, but I do know 2 monitors work fine using a single card with dual outputs. When I setup the PCI card in Vista, I had 4 displays listed in the display properties, so it would work fine in Vista. Not having all 3 monitors available in OS X was the deal breaker for me, which is why I ordered the USB video solution. This will do until a new dual PCI express system can be acquired.

I wonder if a mac pci video card would work. I may be able to get an older one to try. curious.

this user in this thread named pista7 is on top of the sleep issue with 10.5.8. He wrote a kext to try. You vets can check it out and help us noobs out solve the upgrade issues! I'm not sure if it works, one user found an error in it and corrected it. But this may be the answer if it's just a kext to install.

his explanation:

The reason for the 10.5.8 sleep problems is, that there is a small piece of code added to the new kernel, that tries to shut down all CPUs (except the one running the go-to-sleep code of course when going to sleep. This is implemented by calling the registered PM extension (AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement under normal circumstances) and expects a KERN_SUCCESS return value.

However, when there is no PM extension registered (VoodooPower doesn't register itself as one, and probably for a good reason - the PM extension is quite tightly bound to kernel version, so there would have to be one VoodooPower.kext per kernel version), the fallback behavior is to return an error code, which in turn causes the kernel to panic (but you won't see the panic screen because your monitor is already turned off at that point, so it merely appears to hang while going to sleep).

Make sense?

Rats- I was really hoping to be wrong and that you'd get it working.

I looked into PCI video cards when I first built a dual core Atom 945GCLF2 system. It's such a perfect little board for Hackintosh- everything works perfectly and it allows one to build a Hack almost as small as the Mac Mini, but the built in GMA 950 graphics are its main weakness. If it were possible to a upgrade to decent PCI graphics via the only slot, it'd make a much better system.

I found one guy who had attempted it on the web. He actually got video to work through the PCI slot, but had all sorts of trouble; the system crashing, really unstable, terrible video artifacts, etc. I forget if he even got CI-QE working or not, but definitely his conclusion was that it wasn't worth messing with. Still, the fact that he got it working at all was pretty amazing.

I tried pista7's solution as well. The kext load, but doesn't do anything. I deinstalled the AppleCPUPM kext and have no Disabler.kext installed, but SleepEnalber.kext doesn't help.
The Harddrives seem to shutdown, fan still run, screen goes dark and I have to manually reset which results in a CMOS reset.
