Kaido, i sent you an email with the same text, but if you don't see it i'll post it here too
I have a
Gigabyte G31M-ES2L motherboard that works great, except one thing. I
have only been able to use stereo sound 2.1 with it. I know it
supports 5.1 according to the manual, by switching the Mic and Line In
to outputs in the Windows-drivers, i suppose this doesnt work in OSX
tho.
I have a 5.1 system.

Then i found this in your thread (page 115):
"There's a header on the board, but you have to buy a card. You can find them on ebay for about $16. Don't know how it works on a hackintosh Yup, one of these. Pinout is correct- see page 30 in the ES2L manual. My system shows S/P-DIF Out/In: Connection: Optical But of course I don't have the bracket, nor do I have it hooked up to a digital audio device to test. But others on insanely report that it works. Ordered one! Guess we'll find out in a week or two!"

I saw you ordered one of thoose, and i would love to hear if it works
or not, and if it works with 5.1 and not only 2.1. Optical or/and
coax.
I would love you to answer this, it's really bugging me couse i
thought i could get 5.1 to work.

Please answer asap.

Thanks mate, your thread saved me alot of times!

Yes, my 13" MBP just arrived so my Gigabyte EP35-DS3L desktop needs a reformat/reinstall of OS X. Patiently waiting for Kaido's updated guide!

I ordered one off of eBay about a week and a half ago. I have yet to get it (it's coming from Australia), but I'll let you know how it works when it gets here!

mixed reviews scattered throughout various forums. Some say all fine through software updates, some have usb issues along with sleep. OF course their install methods vary so much and seem extremely complicated compared to kaidos guide.

Thanks for trying mosslack!

Well I have it installed, but once again it has messed up my video. My install procedure was to start fresh and install Leopard 10.5.0. Then I updated to 10.5.7 using the combo update. Installed Kaido's UD3P kit. At this point I am I am looking at a 1440x900@75hz screen. In order to get my system up to the correct resolution 1680x1050 under 10.5.7, I found it necessary to reduce the refresh rate to 60hz. This allowed the optimal resolution and things were working fine. Then I installed the 10.5.8 delta update. Now my system will not boot this partition using Chameleon, I have to use the Boot 132 CD. I know some changes were made to the video resolutions for 10.5.8, so this must be the source of my problem. At least I still have my main partition working fine under 10.5.7 and will remain so until a fix is found. HTH

Updated my DQ6's backup partition without a hitch. Upgraded straight from 10.5.7. Rebooted twice- everything works, no problems with video res of my 9800GTX+ . Just had to run AboutThisMac again- the usual, purely cosmetic.

Of course as always, there's still my main 10.5.7 partition standing by- I'll see if there's any quirks with 10.5.8 for a few days, then update the main install.

Updated the DS3L test partition, no problems, other than the usual sound not working after the update. Ran the sound patcher all is fine. It bugs me to no end the problems I have with the UD3P. I think I'm gonna switch to a different video card/monitor setup and see if that helps. I mostly use the UD3P for my everyday computing and not having it updated to the lastest OS version is frustrating.

The motherboards listed for use with Kaido's guide/kits have been well tested and found to work as advertised. Chance are the newer chipset models will probably work, but have not been tested, so use at your own risk. Having said that, let us know if they do in fact work. :D

I gave 10.5.8 a test drive. I used an unused partition, installed 10.5.7 exactly as in the guide. Although the sound did not work after i ran the osx86, i did it again and i got it. Repaired permissions. All seems good. (my main partition has the identical set up and it is fabulous) So then I downloaded the delta, 10.5.7 to 10.5.8 update file. Ran it. It booted right up fine. Video card, NIC, and system profiler are fine. Problems - no sound. I ran the osx86 for my board several times and tried the kext helper app in the soup audio folder. Repaired permissions. No audio still. I also tested the sleep and it goes into a coma. (fine in .7) So I am staying put on my main partition for the time being.

Anyone else have similar issues?

.

Tested sleep on my DQ6 and similar- never wakes up, have to restart. Not a big deal since I don't use sleep, but it definitely seems a common problem with 10.5.8.

Everything else is working great.

Upgrade from 10.5.7 to 5.8 with a Combo Update after following the advice of netkas and installed dsmos.kxt. No problems at all. The System scores a little lower on xbench now, but that might have different reasons.

The only thing that is missing now is S3/STR, real system sleep. It just ain't working. If its my Radeon 4850 or some quirks with other kext files, dunno, but it ain't working on my P35-DS3L.

Another strange behavior is that the DVDPlayer application doesn't recognize my external FW DVD Recorder as a disc drive, so for watching DVDs I have to use VLC.

How significant is 10.5.8 ? In less than a month and a half, it will be in the dust anyway. Besides the challenge ( which can be 'fun') is it worth the time to polish it? I personally feel the hack developers should take a break and gear up for 10.6. My daughters love the hack and I rarely can get on it!

My 10.5.7 is pretty solid, have no reason, desire or inclination to do 10.5.8. I agree with renderingrocks, wait for 10.6, and wait for all the brilliant hackintoshers to write proper kext and drivers for it, when thats all done, then upgrade.

Hey If it aint broke...

I can't speak for everyone, but for me it's the challenge. I use my systems for various things as all computer users do, but the thing that really keeps my interest level high is building them and keeping them running. That's where the fun is. :D

this machine did challenge me. I didn't understand the ahci stuff at first and I already installed XP. So I had to conquer that. Then that v1.6 audio driver for xp on the gigabyte cd didnt work. They posted a new one on their website 4 days after I bought the mb. This thing consumed me and I loved it! I tinkered, messed it up, reinstalled, etc. Well, now It's running great on all fronts and frankly I'm sad! So I may plug in that hd that has 10.5.8 on it and try stuff to get the sound and sleep working. I dont know much outside of kaidos guide so I have been checking out other sites to see how the other side lives in the hackintosh world!

I enjoy the challenge of setting up other people's machines.

My own, I just want to work with as little dicking around as possible. Still running my HTPC with 10.5.6 because I never turn the thing off to ever update it. It runs 24/7 either sleeping, recording shows, or playing media.

There you go, that is the fun part. When they work as they should they get boring for me. I have the Sims 3 installed on my DS3L system just for such occasions. I also just ordered 2 nice 24" WS Asus monitors to hook up to both systems and when all is said and done I will have 3 monitors to look at!

As for where to find answers remember, Google is your friend. More times than not it will point you to an Insanely forum link for your answers, but their (Insanely's) search function sucks eggs if you ask me. So I use Google find a link and then go from there. HTH

Yeah I brought home my Neutrino netbook from work to try and upgrade it this weekend. Didn't have a lot of problems going to 10.5.7, so hopefully that will be the case again.
