My condolences, These sudden losses are difficult! I hope the new guide wasn't on it. The work you put into it is worse than a research paper for school. I'm looking forward to it actually. Although my rig is running flawlessly, it's nice to see whats new.

Yay for Time Machine, eh? 😉 I'm pretty anal about keeping backups...locally on my Time Machine backup drive, on my NAS in zipped archives, and then I keep special projects backed up either online or on a big thumbdrive on my keychain. I got bit no less than twice in the past for not having a backup system and will never, ever, ever, ever be stupid about it again!

Yeah I saw that on Twitter, tough luck. I opted for just buying another HD when my Hitachi 1 Tb recently bit the dust. Now that I have the raid all back up and running I will send in the bad drive for a replacement and have a spare. I love it when a plan comes together. :laugh:

BTW, I went with the ES2L in my new 2U server case. I'm typing on it now. Gonna try XP Pro for awhile and see what kind of file server it makes. At least this way I can use those new WD HD's. Everything seems to be working okay except I had to disconnect the mobo speaker as it is making a continuous tone. Very annoying.

It was the system fan warning, the server case uses standard molex power connectors so the mobo system fan connection is not used. Much better now.

You'll have to check to see if the Adaptec has Mac drivers. Otehr than that, looks great!

For anyone who cares, a Snow Leopad fix was found yesterday. Simple DSDT injection. Along with the HPET fix for IntelCPUPM, all kexts are usuable now. Someone does need to make a 64-bit BlockStorage since our drives are orange, but aside from that it's just peachy 🙂

I already have Vista Ultimate 64 installed on my SCSI machine. I'd like to keep that for games and have OS X (hackintosh) for Final Cut Express. The threads I've seen are extremely long and would take hours to read through.

My advice? Don't bother dual-booting on a single drive. Get a second drive for Leopard. This will make the project infinitely easier 🙂

If you are planning to install OS X on the same HD as Vista, I'd recommend the new Chameleon or EasyBCD as the boot manager. Both solutions are easy to use. I've used both methods and I would have to say the new Chameleon is probably easiest to use. As Kaido just said, the best way is to use separate HD's.

I don't remember anyone on here attempting a SCSI install so it will be interesting to see how that turns out. Do keep us posted on your progress.

So here's my gameplan:

I've been out of town a lot with work this summer, so I'm long overdue (about 6 months, haha) on a thread update. My apologies for the endless delays - this thread has become a long and complicated discussion, so a new thread is definitely in order! 😀

First, I will make a 10.5.7 guide this month for the ES2L, DS3L, and UD3P. As I don't personally have a Core i7 rig, I'm not planning on anything Core i7-based. I am considering upgrading when the 24-gig DDR3 kits are made available later this year, but until then, I have no plans for any other rigs. So this will be another intro-to-Hackintosh/recipe guide. For more in-depth information, Mosslock has put together a terrific forum on Google Groups with TONS of info & discussion for advanced and alternative topics. So my goal is to keep our Anandtech thread here for (1) introductory purposes, (2) for specific guides on the three boards I post, and (3) for general help & how-to.

Second, in September/October, I will make a new thread for Snow Leopard. Thanks to the recent RTC fix, Snow Leopard is now usuable on all boards. Yay developers! The big deal with Snow Leopard is using 64-bit drivers. Right now the basic drivers are available, but you will need a PCI Ethernet card (unless someone recompiles the Psystar R1000 driver for 64-bit, which I'm sure will happen) and a USB sound card (unless VoodooHDA gets fixed). The drives are still orange, so hopefully BlockStorage will be put in the 64-bit pipeline as well.

Installation of Snow Leopard is as easy as Leopard, if not easier - the OS X install process is *much* simpler and I already have the basic building blocks setup for a kit. You will need to do a fresh install of the OS, not an upgrade - Snow Leopard is 64-bit and thus uses 64-bit drivers, so your current 32-bit Leopard drivers will screw things up. So plan on doing a full, fresh install if you want to go with Snow Leopard. In fact, I'd recommend testing it on a spare drive, in order to verify that all of your software still works.

So that's the timeline. July 2009 for the 10.5.7 thread, and probably early October for the Snow Leopard thread. I may or may not upgrade to Core i7 this year; I have no pressing need to upgrade (2.4ghz Quad + 8 gigs of RAM, hehe), so please don't ask.

Thanks, i hope to make a decision soon about a drive. I really have no other place to stick a second hard drive. This setup is goin on my h20 game rig and I had only intended to use one drive with all the case modding i did :\ BUT I am on the way. I just got back from Micro-Center. Would Snow Leapord been a better choice for an OS? I just bought 10.5.6 & Final Cut Express.

Snow Leopard isn't out until September, and not everything is compatible with it yet. So, Leopard was the right choice 🙂

Looks like I'm down to figuring out what to do about a sound card and a NIC card, i'll figure out the SCSI card later. My onboard NIC went to hell but I've been using Bigfoots Killer NIC and then my sound card isn't compatible (Xtreme Gamer.)

EDIT: Funny, I checked Adaptec first and this is what I found. Looks like for the most part Adaptec SCSI cards made for a PC can NOT work with a Mac 🙁

Partitioning and formatting can be done from the Leopard install DVD. As soon as it boots to the install routine simply choose Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. This is all covered in Kaido's guide, you did download it didn't you?

I am a little confused. I just set up my first rig, UD3P (v1.6), Q6600, 8GB, 7200. We fight over using it as it smokes the iMac G5 1.8. I applied all the kexts Kaido provided and the onboard audio and NIC seem to work fine. So why do I need the NIC card and usb audio adapter? Also, as this machine seems to run everything I throw at it, what are the limitations besides update risks?

Do you mean at the beginning of the thread!? I seen some of the d/l kits. My board is a UD3R v1.1 F9 bios. I know they are very similar boards but couldn't something go wrong with it and the UD3P kit?

Also. I have a 300 VRaptor on the way. I'll be figuring out where to mount it in the meantime. In section - X. Preparation, I read That I need a constant USB drive installed on the machine and the Install has to go from an ISO file not straight from the external USB DVD drive I have: that I am familiar with in a Windows installation procedure. Are those two methods the only way or are there others? I don't understand.

We're talking about Snow Leopard, the next version of OS X coming this September. It uses 64-bit drivers; currently Leopard uses 32-bit drivers. At this time, there are not 64-bit drivers for Networking and Audio. That will probably change, if some developers get busy. In Leopard, the current operating system, the drivers work just fine (in 10.5.7) 🙂

It seems like their is a passion to develop these drivers for this community. It's just a matter of time for the developers to do their magic. Who knows, you may be re-writing those guides with a 64 bit section as our christmas present. It will be an exciting time when 10.6 is released.
