Is the fan plugged into the motherboard or into the power supply? One option is you can get an in-line temperature sensor that just relies on the internal air temp to trigger the fan speed, or even a manual control so you can tweak it when you want.

I don't remember. I'll open it up here in a bit to see. If it's connected to the board then it should cut off sometimes right?

Not sure, I installed on a clean HD. You might check the thread to see if it updates a 10.5 install for sure.

I used the procedure on infinitemac to install 10.6, but I'm not getting audio. I can use the USB card for audio, which is the easiest thing, but I'd like to free up the usb port. Hmmm.

Also, I don't get a HDD icon on my desktop. I can see the hdd in the side bar when I open a finder window. Anybody familiar with how to get the hdd icon on the desktop?

That's actually a Snow Leopard feature - no HDD icon on the desktop. You can re-enable it by opening Finder and going into Preferences > General icon on the toolbar > Hard Disks > "Show these items on the desktop".

Not sure what to tell you about audio, it works for me, but it's been awhile and I don't recall if I had any to use any special procedures or had any problems. I am curious as to whether you were able to keep your old stuff or not though.

Actually, I found some errors I made. I'm about to start over...

I just got a 9600 GT in a trade for my 3870. I used uinstaller and installed a nvidia EFI string. Shutdown installed the 9600 rebooted and it won't boot. If I boot with -v I get this:

http://www.pics.bbzzdd.com/beta/users/leglez/IMG_0253.JPG

If I unplug the ethernet and boot with -v I get this:

http://www.pics.bbzzdd.com/beta/users/leglez/IMG_0254.JPG

If I boot into safe mode it also locks up. Only thing I applied with uinstaller was the "Apply EFI String for video card [Custom nVidia].

Should I check anything else if all I am doing is replacing the video card?

I tried removing the 3870 driver, but I am not sure if I did it correctly. I did the following:

sudo -s
[enter password when prompted]
nano /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist

Then deleted:

key>device-properties</key>
<string>YOUR LONG EFI STRING HERE</string>

It still locks up on boot up though.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

I use Final Cut Pro on Leopard. Some of my plugins have problems on Snow, so I'm still on 10.5.8 on my main hard drive. Premier is pretty good, but Final Cut talks to Compressor/Color/Motion/Shake/Soundtrack Pro/DVD Studio Pro really well, which makes things easy, plus it has a TON of great plugins available. Although you still have to use Encore if you want to do Blu-ray authoring, since FCP7 only has basic Blu-ray disc burning available.

this on the ud3p? I tried premier and everything i captured via firewire had out of sync audio. I then tried final cut which crashed. had to use friends mac with imovie which captured fine and then import those to final cut.

i assume this is all working fine for you with the usb audio dongle you praise? could be my camera of course though it worked on the friends macbook. strange

I have a Question, my neighbor has an OSX disc they never installed and will sell it to me. Here's my problem, I don't have access to a Mac, and I'm going to install it on a netbook. Don't have a external DVD or access to one. Google wasn't my friend here but I think I figured part of it out, but can't find info to help me further.

It looks like I can create a partition on the netbooks HD big enough to hold the image of the OSX 10.5 DVD and use Boot-123 to install from it. But I can't find any info on how. I'd like to avoid having to buy an external DVD drive just to install OSX. Is what I'm saying doable? Not sure I'm going to buy the DVD from him until I have this figured out. If this isn't going to work, could I somehow make a bootable USB stick with OSX on it? I have an 8 gig stick, but again, I couldn't find on Google if this is workable or not. Basically, I'm looking for a way yo install OSX on a Netbook without access to a MAC.

Main reason you can't find it with Google is because it can't really be done. You need either a Mac or a Hack to get OS X onto the USB stick. I'm active on several netbook threads on Insanely and this question comes up a lot. I'm not saying it's impossible, but I don't know of anyone who had done it using Windows or Linux for that matter. Best advice is to befriend someone with a Mac or a Hack to do it for you.

@ leglez: Is this 10.5 or 10.6? Do you have a place to CCC this drive/partition to? If so, you could do that and then do a fresh install on the hard drive. Then just move your data and programs back over from the copy. Also, why did you use Custom nVidia? Isn't there a 9600 in the list?

Hummm, well I'm not going to find anyone with a Mac where I live, but I could get an external DVD drive for around $50 and do it that way. Installing it from an external DVD should be simple.

Yup, UD3P. Nope, using a Firewire sound card with various audio inputs/outputs. Sounds like you have a hardware issue - have you run memtest overnight yet?

Just curious, which netbook are we talking about? BTW, my old DVD drive in an external 5.25" USB case works better than the Samsung USB external DVD drive I bought to carry with my netbooks. Of course it has to be plugged into power to work, but it was actually cheaper than the other one.

MSI Wind, although I might get brave and try installing OSX on my PC and triple booting (win 7, Ubuntu right now) I looked for hardware computability and I'm not 100% sure, but I think my PC will run OSX fine, even if I had to perform some hacks to get it working.

Sounds like a plan, the Wind will run OS X just fine. I never followed it up into 10.6, but other similar netbooks are running 10.6 just fine so I'm sure it will also. Good luck.

My OSX install isn't going so smooth, Googled this and am only seeing solutions for OSX people trying to install Windows. Here's what I did:

Ran diskpart in Win 7 and did the following

List disk
Select disk [disk #]
List partition
create partition primary id=af
active

The partition is coming up as ShagOS Swap in my partitioning software. I made a Boot-123 cd and booted to that, then put in the 10.5 DVD I bought from neighbor. It starts up, and I go to the disk utility , I see the partition that says Apple Journal, but it's showing the size as 128 gigs and it's telling me Filesystem verify or repair failed When I try to verify it, repair it, or remove it. Now the Hackintosh guides I'm reading on Google are saying I'll probably need to make some modifications to my retail OSX disk to get all my hardware working properly. But, shouldn't I be able to get past this point? I don't have any exotic hardware so I was going to see if a vanilla OSX disc would work. At this point I'm not sure if not having a hacked disc is the problem or I need to do something else.

I've read 5 guides today and none are saying anything about this error, if I google the error straight up I'm not seeing anything with it related to hackintosh.

ideas here? I'm going to keep at it all night so maybe I'll figure it out on my own (hopefully) but any help from an expert would be lovely.

Anybody able to get SL to work with ATI cards, specifically 2600 pro? I prepared my USB thumb drive in a virtual install of SL (maybe that's the problem?) and everytime after I reboot and select to boot from the USB, a screen comes up saying "You need to power off your machine..yadayada.." in 3 or 4 different languages. Its a Mac screen, but I just never get past that screen.

Its 10.5, surprisingly it boots fine with my 10.6 install that I based around the 3870. No there is no 9600 in the list.

Ummm, now you've got me confused, why are you using Win 7 to partition the disk? For a vanilla install the partition/disk you install on must be formatted as GPT (Guid) and the partition formatted Mac OS Extended Journaled. If you are trying to install on the same hard drive as Win 7 this may be the problem as I'm sure the drive is formatted as MBR. Check the link below for a good guide on setting up to dual boot Win 7 and OS X. This guide was for the Mini 311 with SL, but the principal is the same.

Okay, was the custom choice what everyone else wit this card was using, seems there were successful installs with the 9600. Been so long since I did a 10.5 install I have forgotten most everything I knew. I do know that using the 10.6 setup may not work with 10.5 or vice versa, that seems to be a crap shoot on whether it works or not. HTH

Well I tried using lifehackers guide to install 10.6 with the 9600 and it went perfect. So I guess now I gotta make the transition to 10.6. Any easy way to transfer mail inboxes, itunes, address book, ect..?

Try leaving SleepEnabler.kext in there, with the EyeTV device unplugged, then reboot and try sleep. Make sure to install the kext with KextHelper or via command line properly!

K, thanks for the help so far.

No sleep enabler = no manual sleep, no autosleep
SleepEnabler / no EyeTV = manual sleep is OK, no autosleep

The guide I used told me to partition in Windows, I have no idea why, but since I've never installed OSX on a hackintosh I figured I'd follow it to a tee. My system is up and running, well sorta. I am having a pain in the ass time getting my sound to work, my on board sound is definitely supported with a 3rd party ktext and I believe my Razer Barracuda is supported (CMI8788 chipset) but getting either to work is really taxing. Oh and I haven't even tried to get my Radeon 4850 1gig working. Googling says I should be able to, but we shall see lol.

Ah ha, now we're talkin'. I know the migration assistant located in apps will help to some extent and I'm sure the newer version of Mail will be able to import the older version.
