It's mostly cosmetic. Download and run Geekbench- it will report on the opening screen what speed your memory is actually running at.

Also, give this a try:

Download this and drop it in the root level of the Extra folder. (Only if you're using Chameleon 2.0). Then check your memory speed in about this Mac.

Hey Zaap, Geekbench and CPU-X and CPU-Z on Win7 all say 4.0GB at 800MHz. Processor Speed 2.5GHz and Bus Frequency 333 MHz. If there is anyway to improve that, I would love to know. I know CPU-Z has SPD and a collum for EPP#1 and has information about 533MHz. It has tRC@48, Command Rate 2T, and Voltage 2.1V. Are those the settings I would put in my Gigabit Bios to get 1066 MHz memory?

Your 1066RAM must be reading as 800mhz in the BIOS then. That's very common, in fact, I believe most any 1066 RAM will default to 800.

CPU-Z should say 533Mhz (which is 533Mhz x2=1066).

I would suggest setting your RAM speed manually in the BIOS- I don't remember the exact settings of the UD3P off hand, but make sure you set the timings correctly, and also the voltage. For example, if the voltage is 2.1 V, then yes, make sure it's set to that in the BIOS.

Look for the CAS latency/timing settings, then check the ideal settings for the exact RAM you have. For example a common setting might be 5-5-5-15, and the DRAM Voltage set at 2.1. (The default is probably 1.8)

This is just an example- I'm not saying use those settings- you need find out what the settings are. If you got your RAM at newegg, or you can find the exact same model on newegg- then read the specifications tab, and also read user reviews for the ideal settings others are using. Many times people will report in their reviews the ideal RAM timings and you can just follow them as a guide.

Also- Chameleon 2.0 has specific issues with RAM speeds. On my DQ6 system, it read my 1066 RAM as 667. Placing the smbios file in the Extra folder solves this issue.

Has anyone tried SOFTWARE raid for these builds? I don't care so much about hardware and software will rebuild nicely if working correctly. ie: 3x1.5TB Soft Raid-5 for media. I see people doing it but not sure what the outcome is on the boards listed.

I'm contemplating building a new machine for a Plex media server for my HDTV.

By "everything included with it" you mean, Q6600, 8GB, 750TX, 150GB Raptor, two 1TB drives, and a 8800GT???

Any chance you'd come up w/a kit for the ASUS P5N7A-VM? Cheaper than the UD3P and comes w/an on-board GeForce 9300 supported by MBP restore discs or vanilla 10.5.6 discs.

Zaap has been wonderfully helpful to me but I am stumped with a shutdown issue. I followed your guide for the GA-G31M-ES2L Kaido and everything works beautifully... apart from not being able to fully shut down! Sleep, Restart etc are fine.

I ran the UInstaller script again - still doesn't shut down the fan etc on the machine. Is it something in the BIOS options? When I followed all the instructions, such as disabling ON-Chip Primary PCI-IDE and Secondary PCI-IDE the machine wouldn't even boot.....

Everything else is great...works fine...sleep/screensaver is fine.... just not the full Shut Down...

Is there a Kext that I can load in to fix the shutdown issue?

I updated the instructions for those to be Enabled, apparently it disables SATA too

Do you have the proper BIOS release, and settings? That's pretty odd - the OpenHaltRestart takes care of shutdown/restart.

Bios is F8 for sure - there is nothing on the motherboard I could of plugged in wrong that is stopping a full shutdown?

Do you have the OpenHaltRestart commandthingy so I can run just that again (using the Install Custom Kexts from HD window) ?

<edit>

http://www.mediafire.com/file/...enHaltRestart.kext.zip

Found it - installed it and it made no difference to the Shut Down problem... checked cables inside computer - all looks fine. CPU fan, Case fan and Graphics Card fan keep spinning but monitor picture does go off. Odd how Sleep and Restart work perfect but shutdown isn't doing it...

fathead, I know it's a PITA, but if you haven't really started using your system yet, maybe try reinstalling from scratch? Maybe something went wrong during install? At the very least, if you reinstall and get the same problem, then you'll confirm that it has to be BIOS/hardware related.

Yeah that's veeeeeeeeeeeery odd. Post a list of your hardware, and have you run a Memtest?

Zaap - I would do, but I've now installed a ton of stuff and didn't think this couldn't be fixed with a little tweak down the line. Plus everything is working perfectly apart from that so I never really thought of it as a problem till now =/

Kaido - what is the best free memory test program for the Mac?

I just use Memtest, it's included in my ES2L kit - inside the discs folder, just burn it as an ISO like the Magic Boot Disc.

I'm running Rember as I type so hopefully that will let me know.... Memory test came back fine

Test Results

All tests passed!

Total built-in memory: 4 GB

If I did re-install - which is the best course of action? Just install over the existing installation? Or format this partition and start from scratch with the install procedure?

So sad... it all works so nicely... is there nothing Kext-related that could fix it?

The only other odd thing I notice with this is the hard drive light on the case isn't flickering when in use.... it's correctly plugged in as far as I can tell...and all the buttons at the front including the reset work fine....

The openhaltrestart should have fixed it already.

Sometimes network interfaces can screw with shutdown/restart/sleep. Long shot, but does it shutdown properly without the wireless dongle (and software if it uses any) installed? At this point, the only thing I can think of.

Also, if you do a reinstall- I'd recommend a reformat- just to insure it doesn't just clean-install over the old and keep some setting that could be causing the problem. That's probably my paranoia- but if you're gonna nuke and pave, might as well just nuke and pave.

Another thing- I always recommend splitting the drive into at least 2 partitions and doing TWO OSX installs- each as a backup to the other, and also one you can experiment with, test updates, etc. without borking your main install. Both will boot from the same Chameleon bootloader. You only need about 10GB of space for a basic backup-install partition.

Zaap - you are a genius! Yes... it was the wireless dongle! I removed it, restarted and yes - it shut down with it removed! Did it a few more times - same thing... so THANK YOU!

I take it this is just something I will have to live with if I am using this wireless USB dongle?

Again, Zaap, you have been fantastic help.... I really appreciate it.

Kaido - thank you so much for the install disks... appreciate it too! =]

Ahah, finally figured out how to use Plex Media Server! Using this, you can stream your iTunes library from any computer to any other computer running Plex, including Cover Art!

1. Install Plex Media Center on each computer you want to stream multimedia from:

Currently Plex Media Server is embedded in the Plex installation, so you have to install Plex on each Mac, then go into Preferences > System > Media Server and set it to "Always Running", then you can quit Plex. This adds the Plex Media Server (PMS) app to your list of login items, so whenever you boot up your Mac, PMS will always start running in the background to make your iTunes content available to all the other computers on your network.

Currently there is no stand-alone Media Server available, so you have to install Plex. There are apparently plans to make it stand-alone in the future, however. That will be nice! Also, there is no Windows client. However, you CAN stream any DRM-laced content from iTunes, as long as the DRM account is activated on your streaming computer. So if you buy a song or video on iTunes that has DRM and want to play it on a different computer in Plex, just authorize it in iTunes first, then you'll be fine. That's a REALLY nice feature!

2. Create a Static IP on each computer you are streaming from:

Since we're going to be adding a hard-coded link in Plex, you should setup your computer with a Static IP. If you're not familiar with what that means, basically you get a randomly-assigned IP address from the DHCP server in your router whenever you boot up your computer - in other words, your computer's IP address will randomly change unless you hard-code it. Since we always want to be able to stream music from that computer, we have to change the IP to Static so it won't change. Go into your computer's System Preferences > Network > (active network adapter) and then select "Using DHCP with manual address" next to "Configure". I use numbers between 50 and 100 on my network (DHCP on my router is 192.168.1.100+).

3. Add the IP link to Plex:

Open Plex, go into Music, Add Source, then click on <None> (not the Browse/Add/Remove buttons on the right side) and type in one of the following:

Music: plex://192.168.1.112/music/iTunes
Videos: plex://192.168.1.112/video/iTunes
iPhoto: plex://192.168.1.112/photos/iPhoto
Aperture: plex://192.168.1.112/photos/Aperture

Replace the IP address with the IP address of the computer running Plex Media Server, or with "localhost" for your own computer. Music works fine, although I haven't gotten Video to connect yet, and I haven't tried iPhoto or Aperture since I don't use them.

Tip: Authorize your iTunes account on the computer you are streaming to

So that's pretty much it - make sure each computer with your music has (1) Plex Media Server running, and (2) a Static IP, and then setup the Plex link on your streaming box, along with any iTunes authorizations needed for DRM-protected content. I wish it was better documented, it'd be really nice to figure out how to stream iTunes videos properly...

Try reversing the plugin on the mobo as they are not always labeled properly. That should fix it.

Whoo, Tivo plugin works great with Plex! It's pretty basic - just play/pause - but it does the job! I only have one Tivo, but now I can stream shows to any computer in the house, including my Plex Media Center rig! :D

Plex is basically the reason I built the $150 Foxconn hack in the first place. I've been using Plex or XBMC for years.

For music, though, nothing beats Subsonic!

Yeah, I'm a huge fan of XBMC - my only gripe has been no HD content. So now Plex does that, plus online streaming, which is just fabulous! imo the ultimate Home Theater combo is Plex/Tivo/Bluray player...play anything! :D
