I understand there are some ways of hacking into the phone and doing this without paying Verizon? How easy is it to connect these phones to my computer?

How is this different then asking what the best places is to download illegal MP3s?

It's different because you can make your own ringtones or wallpapers, or have a free place to get them, but have no way to get them onto your phone unless you pay Verizon to do it. The service they provide is not copywrited. They are trying to force you to pay to do it through them only.

In fact, there is a class action lawsuit in the works right now because of it. It isn't just the bluetooth, the USB and serial capabilities are crippled the exact same way. If you enable bluetooth, USB gets enabled as well.

Because I don't understand what's going on. From what I can tell, you pay to download ringtones. Fine. But to get them to my cell phone, I have to pay to transfer the files???

And if I take a picture from my cell phone, how do I get it off of there? PAY verizon to email it to myself? Give me a break.

The 710 and 815 have Bluetooth, but it appears to be purposely limited by excluding OBEX so you can't transfer files to and from your PC. Instead, they want you to pay them to transfer your own files. Can I do it with a cable, and if so what do I need to hack in the phone to make this possible?

I have done everything you are asking about. You need a USB cable to hack the phone. You can not do it via bluetooth.

Go here and read. What you really need to do is a seem edit and maybe a flash to a newer firmware.

Yes, you have to pay for the ringtones...

Well shoot, if all I get charged is minutes, then can I just download/upload during nights and weekends to my hearts content? Or do I have to sign up for some additional package?

You might get an additional charge for data...

i own a v710 and it has the earlier firmware that allows me to transfer pics/music to and from the phone through the transflash card. pretty much stick the 128mb card in my phone, save all pictures to the card, take card out and use a 7-in-1 card reader to get the pictures on my computer. for music, i put mp3's on my phone, and on my computer i truncate the song so that its ringtone length (around 30 seconds). put the music on the card, put the card back in my phone, and then transfer from the card to the phone and voila, ringtones with not one red cent going to verizon.

i've hacked multiple t720s and 730s

add my own wallpapers and ringtones without using get it now.

with the v710 you can transfter stuff on its flash card

Yes, that's the idea. They purposely designed everything so that you cannot send yourself the files for free. It's a rip.

But I have the software you need and I interface my V220 with it.

I just looked on their site. You have to pay an additional charge ($5) for unlimited text and picture messaging, but you still use your airtime minutes.

Plus, you have to go and create an account on one of their websites, dowload your pictures to that account, log onto that account with your PC and then transfer them to your PC. BLECH!

On the V710, the transflash did work with the earlier version of the frimware, but that firmware had problems. If you had verizon upgrade the firmware, they disabled that feature because the "forgot" to do it on the earlier version. Easily fixed with a seem edit.

Edit: The transflash will work with pics, not audio. Audio will work with the seem edit.

vtext is free other than the charge to receive a text message...

Why would you need to hack it. Or do you mean unlock it?

I have googled before to find unlock codes for my phone.
But you can only unlock Nokia 3000's and above, and the 3300 seems to be absent from all those lists.

I would really like to have the Motorola A630 with Verizon.
Or better yet, have the Motorola A780 on ANY american service.

You are VERY far out of the loop mister
Verizon, is a CDMA carrier, "unlocking" phones pertains to GSM phones. You can't use an A630 on Verizon or Sprint (or Nextel for that matter, but lets not involve iDEN). And you can use the A780 w/US carriers, you'd need to import it from somewhere like myworldphone.com or eBay, and its just a matter of putting a Cingular or T-Mobile SIM card in there.

HE may not be. I assumed that he ment unlocking the features on the phone that verizon has locked. Full OBEX, DUN, and custom banners for instance can all be obtained by unlocking the e815.

That should be all you need to know.

SHOULD be, but those require a level of knowledge that I don't have yet. I can't understand half of what they're saying in the Quick Start Guide.

yllus's post on the first page pegged it dead-on.

His post contains everything you need to know. The other pages make it seem more complicated than it really is.

I'd love to say I know, but I've only hacked the V220, V300 and V6x0 firsthand. I've read up enough on HoFo to know you can do the following:

- Improve your output volume slightly
- Upload/download ringtones, pictures, video from/to your PC
- Upload Java games to your cell (I have the original Prince of Persia on mine)
- Use a "seem editor" to change the inner and outer LCD displays of your phone (instead of the name of my cell provider on the outside of my phone while opened, it reads 'Sully')

I found the HowardForums really confusing as well. The 1-2-3 I posted encapsulated 90% of the advice you'll get there, the remaining 10% concerning Java games and display editing.

Get a v710 and a transflash card. Use a card reader and transfer all your pictures/movies/ringtones on the the transflash card and you're ready to go. No need to hack your phone at all.

You can also download Mobile Phone Tools which is for Motorola phones only but, I think that software is a piece of crap.

Looks like Verizon disabled this on later firmware versions (which people are recommending because of other issues). You can no longer transfer files between the flash card and the phones memory, so you still need to hack the phone to enable this.

You're getting the idea. You can transfer pictures, not audio with transflash.

To get most of the features that Verizon disabled on the V710, you're gonna have to do a seem edit, seem 041a specifically. You will need a USB interface cable to do this. It really is not that intimidating as it first seems. HoFo has too much information on it and it can get confusing. The search feature there returns to many results. The only way to get all the hardware features that this phone is capable of (like OBEX support) is a new flex version. Verizon is not going to make these features available unless they are made to.

I have done exaclty what you are trying to figure out on a V710. The newer firmware version is better than the old one, and more than likely if you get a new V710 from Verizon, it will be the newer version. If that's the case, you won't have to flash the phone, just a seem edit to enable the features that you want.

I have "hacked" a V710, V600, 2 V505's and a V220.

I have the files you need to do the mods. You'll have to come up with Motorola Phone Tools on your own because it's not free. If your not confortable editing the seem, I have the modified one I copuld send you. You'll still have to upload to your phone.

So you'll need:

USB Cable
PK2man (I have one modified for the V710)
MPT

Or, send me your phone and I'll do it for you, free. You pay shipping both ways. You wouldn't need to get a cable then. You could transfer everything via bluetooth. You'll still need MPT.

I might just go with the Samsung A670. I don't like how huge the 710/815 are, and I really don't need all of the extra stuff, and people say the 265's quality is spotty at best. I like the size and features of the 670, but it may not have as good a reception as the Motorolas.

Well screw this. Nobody out there seems to have deals for people who are current customers. If I want to keep my current number I pretty much have to go to the Verizon store and pay a hefty sum for the phone. I hate the whole cell phone market!

Actually the A670 is teh winnar. Radioshack had it for $100 cheaper AR than Verizon website with a 1 year contract. I'm happy.
