That's pretty messed up. Hacking sites for fun or to do a prank is fine, but hacking to hurt people... that's just wrong.
Hacking for fun is NOT fine.
I'm pretty sure most of the big companies consult with hackers to learn how to better protect their software. Hacking has its uses. Inflicting physical harm on others is definitely not part of the philosophy, though.
That's not hacking for fun or "to do a prank."
Well I'm not completely familiar with the culture so this may be off, but I don't think the companies hire the hackers (probably happens in some cases, but not all). The hackers just try to break into systems (for "fun," it's a challenge to them). Then the hackers hold security conferences that people from the software companies attend (or maybe it's the other way around, the companies hold the conferences and the hackers attend), and they discuss weaknesses and how to fix them. Then the hackers go back to doing whatever they do, probably working a normal job and hacking in their free time. They don't get any compensation, they just enjoy looking for holes in systems and feel it is their duty to inform others of these holes when found so that they may be patched.
At least, that's how I've read it works for most "true" hackers. There are obviously exceptions, like the script kiddies involved in this stupid little stunt.
