That's pretty messed up. Hacking sites for fun or to do a prank is fine, but hacking to hurt people... that's just wrong.

That's pretty messed up. All for the "lulz" I suppose.

Script kiddies need to die. I'm sure no real hacker would do anything this immature.

Even if it were Scientology's website being hacked? Or the KKK's site? Or hacking a spam server?
Somehow hacking a spam server so that it would electrocute the operator should earn you some kind of medal and national recognition.

I'm pretty sure most of the big companies consult with hackers to learn how to better protect their software. Hacking has its uses. Inflicting physical harm on others is definitely not part of the philosophy, though.

People like that should be the reason DIAF needs to be added as a capital punishment option.

I meant in comparison to hacking for physical harm.

That's not hacking for fun or "to do a prank."

Well technically it'd be the same to many people.

IMHO hacking is not about causing harm or financial ruin to someone. I knew people in the 80's, kids really; that made small fortunes carding stuff back then...it was too easy. To me it was wrong, I just wanted to get connected to Germany or France to get on Lutz / Altgiers / TCHH / QSD and the like.

Well I'm not completely familiar with the culture so this may be off, but I don't think the companies hire the hackers (probably happens in some cases, but not all). The hackers just try to break into systems (for "fun," it's a challenge to them). Then the hackers hold security conferences that people from the software companies attend (or maybe it's the other way around, the companies hold the conferences and the hackers attend), and they discuss weaknesses and how to fix them. Then the hackers go back to doing whatever they do, probably working a normal job and hacking in their free time. They don't get any compensation, they just enjoy looking for holes in systems and feel it is their duty to inform others of these holes when found so that they may be patched.

At least, that's how I've read it works for most "true" hackers. There are obviously exceptions, like the script kiddies involved in this stupid little stunt.
