Umm... why don't you just install Linux or FreeBSD on your home computer, and leave running all the time while connected to the network? That way, you can get free shell access whenever you want, without having to subject people more advertising.

Because not everyone has a fast internet connection at home. Even those on broadband, a large percentage are throttled on the uplink to 128K or so. Too slow for any serious work.
