hacker show on USA - Mr. Robot

It was pleasantly entertaining... even if some of the writing was VERY cliche. I don't know enough about the tech side to vouch for authenticity, but it's for sure a hell of a lot more accurate than most other shows I've seen.
 
Not impressed with this show so far, I'll give it 2-3 more shows before I have a good idea on where this is all going.

I stayed up last Friday night and caught one of the replays of this. It wasn't really on my radar... It's got a familiar feel to it. It's almost like Fight Club meets Matrix (had Edward Norton not quit his job in the beginning... 😛)

It's actually not as annoying as other similar shows/movies. I've got the series set to record on my DVR, but I'm not holding my breath that this thing won't fall apart when they're pressed to record episodes without having so much time to develop the story. The pilot had a lot of cinematic value and suspense that was well thought out. I don't see them being able to keep that up through more than a couple of episodes before they reveal too much about the characters and plot.
 
I really appreciated the fact that the UNIX commands that they zoomed in on were legit.

Overall, there were a few moments of cringe ("you guys meet IRL?"), but not enough to prevent me from watching.

The only time I cringed was when that one exec was trying to earn cred with Linux/KDE talk. :awe: But... some people are just cringe worthy, I didn't see it as an example of bad writing.

And I thought the "you guys meet IRL?" was rather in-character both in how it was said and also the reason behind why he said it.


I really enjoyed the first episode, can't wait to see more. I was highly impressed with how it handles the technical information and plotting; it seemed highly accurate and smartly done. Considering other "cyber" shows handle the cyber aspect of their shows in cringe-inducing fashion (CSI: Cyber and Scorpion come to mind), this is a huge breath of fresh air.

Add in the fact that it really seems to have a good plot and so far what seemed like great acting (the whole sub-plot of Elliot's mental condition is playing out perfectly, very well done).

There's been some forced moments but to me, they do not stand out excessively, and I fully expect the dynamics to work themselves out as the season progresses. That the show already earned a second season prior to airing demonstrates the material is solid moving forward this season, and should really help ensure we have a solid story arc.

hahaha, I was thinking Fight Club and Hackers (but not as cheesy) and maybe even a little Live Free and Die Hard. 😛

But Fight Club definitely, just because of the whole financial meltdown, start at zero thing.

Anyway, I finally watched the first episode and absolutely loved it.

The way I see it, both are definitely cringe-worthy, but they're cringe worthy in reality (the awkward KDE vs. Gnome speech to earn cred, people saying 'IRL' out loud) and these things really happened, so the show is just being accurate. I say it's well done.

I heard the director talking about the show on TV. Apparently they have the actors actually type in the real commands but Christian Slater is a dumbass with tech (he thought a case would make his cell phone harder to hack).

Don't forget about the constant monologue and social fails of the main character.

Hackers was more of a us vs them movie, but the 'them' was the FBI and not corporate America or the top 1%. ...Different adversary altogether.
 
So I saw the first episode and liked it a lot (aside from Christian Slater pretending to be a master hacker of some sort, seriously?)

Haha, I really like the monologue they are using.

As for the hackers reference...just more for the 'culture' than anything...since it's about "hackers" in the show. 😛

Kinda half watched it, looks better than a lot of things out there these days.

Might again, just to really give it a go, but skeptical.

The most cringeworthy part was the main character's childhood friend and associate as a cybersecurity account executive asking what a rootkit was (so it could be explained to the viewer). 🙄

It is all very familair since in addition to Fight Club, The Matrix, and Hackers, it has elements of Dexter -particularly if the vigilantism continues episodically along with the serial struggle against E-vil Corp.

Nothing is ever new and it could easily be worse, but it could still reasonably be better -though it must seem great to teenaged boys.

My main problem is this idiotic "anti society" manifesto that keeps getting spouted by every "hacker". Nobody does that garbage for altruistic reasons and the idea they can actually "take down society" simply isn't a realistic goal. It wasn't realistic in the early 90s before the mass technology surge and it isn't in today's world. Even if you completely compromised a financial institution's systems, you'd have to destroy the offsite disaster recovery back ups (likely a completely different company) AND destroy and hard copy / offline back ups.

The entire "fuck society" mantra is tired and stupid. If you really hated society, I hear Somalia is nice this time of year.

Outside of that, it actually isn't half bad. The hacking isn't a simple "oh, let me run some commands and do some code" kind of BS normally seen. It is running a program that took hundreds of hours to code on a system.

Well, it might get annoying, but last I checked, that is still the reason most people get into the more hardcore hacking: fuck society.

However, it doesn't necessarily seem they came up with "fuck society" as their actual mantra or tagline or group name. Look at the building they decided to call home. It's Fun Society, but the "un" is unlit. Perhaps it was just convenient, as it says "F Society" and they thought, "hey, that's perfect! Yeah, f society man!"


Also, it seems their goal isn't just to take a bank down, it's to shut down global commerce. If you can hit basically all the main banking and trade centers, target all the servers that even deal with currency exchange and commerce, I think it is theoretically possible. The scale of that attack is insane, and you'd have to take some seriously convoluted steps to screw with and cripple recovery efforts. Not impossible, but realistically beyond even a snowball's chance in hell.

Yeah, that sounded bogus but then I don't know how many people out of IT have ever heard of off-site storage sites like Iron Mountain. If you can't get to the backups, it doesn't matter how many server farms you take down. I assumed this was just one of those situations where they ignore reality for convenience of the plot.

On the other hand, since f society seems to have disappeared after Elliot did his little job for them. That would indicate that there is a much grander plan and the whole f society thing was just a cover story. That would make a lot more sense if we're really going to have some intrigue. My first guess is that the whole thing could have been set up by the 1% kabal. Maybe they needed to get rid of the CTO and they used Elliot to do it.

Personally I like the narrative style. There's so much more information and background you can convey with a simple and relatively unobtrusive narrative than with tedious, endless flashbacks or whatever other non-narrative device you have to use.
