I found a cheap arcade style controller i want, but it's for the Playstation (and PS2?). Can I hack it into a PC gameport (or USB) controller? Is it internally different or is only the connector different?

Edit - changed from PS2 to PS1.

funny that it's a usb device yet it lists NT as one of the compatible OS's

Thanks, but a $15 converter would really defeat the purpose of me buying the cheaper PS2 controller. Is it not possible to hack it myself to work?

I have that exact same converter..it works great, since the Dual Shock controller is the best controller out there (four shoulder buttons make it better than the nicer feeling GC controller).

but there is one problem:

the PS2 controller SUCKS to use on PC games....I didn't figure out why untill I realize that PS2 games use the PS2 controller's pressure sensative buttons (all of them). So I went and got a PSOne dual shock for $15....best PC gamepad there is =)

FatAlbo, might want to fix your link.

Isn't the Parallel port to slow for a joystick?
Anyone have the PS2 controller schematics?

I'm also wondering about building an interface to use the same controller on a Dreamcast.

bump

Also let me re-ask. I'm thinking about getting a PSX arcade controller and hook it to a PSX controller extension cable and hacking that to splice into a PC gameport or USB cable. Will this work? If so, would I be able to hook two of these up to the PC at once?

I also want to hack another PSX controller extention cable to splice in to a Dreamcast controller extension cable to play the same PSX controller on the Dreamcast. Will this work?

The PSX controller I saw is cheaper than getting one for the DC or PC. Also getting cables & hacking them is cheaper than buying the PSX to PC or PSX to DC adapters.

If anyone knows of a better place to ask this, feel free to mention it.

An almost 10 year necro, pretty impressive, even for a spammer.
