Does the beneficial effects of Coffee lessen if you drink it consistently? Say... one cup every other day?

By beneficial effects I mean the focus enhancement and the keeping awake.

I've drank coffee since I was single digits in age, and I don't remember beneficial effects. I now drink one to two pots per day, and if I don't, I get a headache. I suppose that's a beneficial effect :^D

Recent developments on the benefits of coffee from MNT news

Coffee may reduce stroke risk. A study monitored coffee consumption of 83,269 Japanese adults aged 45 to 74 years and found that people who drank coffee on a daily basis were at a 20 percent lower risk of stroke compared to those who did not drink it often.11

High coffee intake may help against prostate cancer. According to a study published in the journal Cancer Causes and Control, men who drank four or more cups of coffee a day had 59% reduced risk of prostate cancer recurrence and/or progression than those whose coffee consumption was just one cup a week or less.12

Can coffee protect our eyesight?. Research published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that drinking coffee may protect against deteriorating eyesight and even blindness.

Tinnitus less common in women who drink more coffee. A new study in The American Journal of Medicine finds that women who consume more caffeine are less likely to have tinnitus.

Study links coffee intake with reduced risk of endometrial cancer. Endometrial cancer is the most common cancer of the female reproductive organs in the US, affecting around 1 in 37 women in their lifetime. But in a new study, researchers found that drinking three to four cups of coffee a day could reduce the risk of endometrial cancer by almost a fifth.

Detoxing from coffee isn't bad, headache for 2 days max, just take a Tylenol, and you're golden

Nah. I like coffee too much. I enjoy tea, both real an herbal, but they aren't a replacement for coffee. To keep from getting a headache, I need the caffeine equivalent of two cups per day. I'm ok with that. Not having coffee for the flavor would irritate me more than the headache. IOW, while I'm trivially a slave to caffeine addiction, I don't mind.

Wow. Are you a college student by any chance?

Unfiltered coffee is thought to raise LDL cholesterol, so if true then more of the unfiltered stuff is bad

It's just one example, but I drink french press coffee daily and my LDL is 101.

I think there are far worse things for you than unfiltered coffee.

Nope, I'm far away from college age. I drink coffee for the experience. I don't remember ever getting a lift from it. From the scent while grinding/brewing, to the flavor in the cup. It's a 100% pleasurable package. I also like having a beverage close to drink slowly. It gives me couple seconds of break from work here and there.

I mentioned liking tea, but I can't drink that in the same quantities. The tannins mess up my stomach.

Do you build up a tolerance? Yes. Does it completely erase the effects of a drug (caffeine or any drug)? No.

The _health_ benefits of coffeee (if you believe today's medical studies and not yesterdays or tomorrows), though, can only be had through consistent consumption. If coffee protects you from things like diabetes, heart disease, or some cancers, then you're not going to get much benefit if you only drink a cup once a month.

Coffee is life. I'm addicted and don't care what non human unAmerican naysayers have to say. Caffeine doesn't affect me other than to give me headaches if my level drops too low.

Should probably add that this relies on drinking BLACK coffee, load it up with cream / sugar and you're probably better off without it.

I'm on my second pot. To be accurate, I only make 8-10 cup pots on the weekend. I made a 10 cup this morning, and an 8 cup just now. Weekdays, I make a 12 cup in the morning, and sometimes an 8 cup at night; or maybe espresso, or even instant. Depends on my mood.

Not sure, I can still get a little caffeine buzz but it's more of a habit. I get to work or drive some long distance and I want coffee.

Yes, you gain tolerance after a few days and need to up your intake if you want to get the same effect. Which is why some people drink coffee by the pot (though some people aren't all that caffeine sensitive and require that much right from the beginning).

I only drink 2 to 4 cups a day at most, but I also alternate with green tea (or sometimes black) and energy drinks. Often I'll have nothing but green tea for a few days, and I become resensitized to the level of caffeine in coffee. It doesn't take long to gain or lose caffeine tolerance.

I rarely get caffeine withdrawal headaches because I don't do the drink a pot a day, every day thing that real coffee addicts do. I don't like to anyway because the side effects of coffee (acidity causing heartburn, for one thing) and the caffeine level negates the health benefits with that quantity, and you begin to need it more to maintain your normal level of alertness rather than giving you a boost.

But I do drink coffee an average of 4 days a week, still. Not just because I like caffeine but also because I love the flavor and enjoy drinking it.

Short answer: Don't drink coffee all the time if you are using it as a caffeine delivery system.

Related question, does drinking several cups of coffee mess with anyone else's stomach? After 3 or 4 cups my gut starts feeling wretched.

In average I have maybe a cup per day. When I'm off I tend not to have any, but at work I'll have a cup or go to Tim Horton's.

Though in the past month or so I've been drinking way more because it's Roll Up The Rim. 😛 I find it definitely helps me focus more if I'm coding or something. On night shifts I start to get a bit tired around 2-3am and since I know I have to work till 7 I'll usually have a small cup of coffee and that helps me through the rest of the shift. I could live without it though, but it just takes the edge off.

7am morning shifts, different story. I'll have at least 2 coffees by the time it's 8. I hate early mornings. Those are made for sleeping, not getting up.

When I have an extra large Timmy's I find my stomac sometimes feels like it's growling a lot, but not the same feeling as when I'm hungry. The best way to describe it would be, that it's half assly digesting what's already there and fast tracking everything towards the next stage. The impeding bathroom experience that happens after would reinforce that. 😛
