Well, I have been desperately trying to get my new monitor to increase its sharpness. I have an iiyama i90a and have been having to run it at 1152x864 since the monitor has rather poor text sharpness (if you're looking for at an i90a, I do not recommend). Well, I am running the monitor on a Radeon and played with some of the settings.
What I did was go into the adjustment settings in the Radeon control panel and jacked up the horizontal size and then scaled down the horizontal size through the monitor controls. Overall text sharpness noticably increased and now running at 1280x1024 is possible.
