so I was at work today and my boss and I get into an argument. I go to leave for a bit to cool down and I notice a big puddle under my car. I kneel down and test the puddle and sure enough its oil, and alot of it. I knew my valve cover gasket was going but have been putting it off. So I quick check my oil and yep, it only shows enough oil to cover maybe 2 mm of the dipstick. So I run up to the gas station and add a couple quarts real quick thinking that that should get me by til I can get to the mechanic. When I get back to work I decide to check my oil again just to make sure that I was ok. I check my oil and I am about 2 quarts over.

FVCK!!!! I forgot to run my engine before I checked the oil. So I had to drain all my oil out and put new stuff in just because I was all stressed and forgot to let my car idle for a couple minutes.

FLAME ON ME!!!!!!!

you're engine is supposed to be up to temp before you check your oil...otherwise it settles in the pan and the reading isnt accurate

So, when you change your oil and put in the required X amount, and it reads perfectly full on the dipstick, you run the engine and then find it's not "full" anymore and add more?

you can be right...this isnt something worth arguing over...now, peanut butter on top vs. jelly on top I will debate on for hours

Yeah I'm not too serious...generally I'm not too concerned with what other people do to their cars unless I'm looking to buy. BUT, why would you put in more oil than what the manufacturer has already specified as the correct amount?

read my post...I was pissed off and wasnt thinking clearly...I assumed the puddle came from my car, especially after I checked my oil and it showed me 3 quarts low

I did, I'm asking in general why would you put in more than the "correct" amount designated by the manufacturer

So - the oil on the ground was not from your car?

If that's correct, then pause a moment to think of the person whose car is lacking that oil.

:)
