Elephants are damn near at the top of the list of animals that shouldn't be in zoos. Actually, close all the zoos. Everyone can see animals on the Internet now. It's not like it's the 1800's and we're exhibiting the mysteries of the dark continent.

Some (not all) zoos do quite a bit of good as far as rehabilitating and breeding endangered species. They wouldn't be able to afford that without the public side of things. They also make good research centers for our ecologists and other scientists.

I've no doubt, although they're clearly organized around displaying the animals as curiosities. I think if you set out to build a place for breeding and rehabilitating endangered species it would look a lot different from a zoo.

this.

some zoos go to great lengths to make proper habitats for their animals and while I agree that there are many zoos that should be shuttered (aging, large city zoos that are cage dependent), far more good is done with zoos than without it.

There is nothing that youtube can do in terms of exposing people to animals, and spreading appreciation, better than a zoo can.

Except the whole captivity part.

again, depends on the zoo. As long as you provide the proper territory--meaning necessary range--for the animals, then it really isn't a problem.

Also consider that these animals aren't captured from the wild and put in zoos. Most are either bred in captivity or brought in for rehabilitation.

We're not talking about Russian circus bears, here.

Many zoo's protect certain animals from being wiped out by their native country (government or otherwise).

The protection is really a by-product of housing them for exhibition. If we want to protect them from extinction we could probably come up with a better place to do it than a zoo.

Elephants are migratory over ranges exceeding 100 miles, so providing enough territory for them isn't really an option in a zoo setting.

I agree its not the main goal but it is a good thing and I'll take it.

We also shouldnt be policing the world, especially cultures we dont understand. But thats life.

This is true and I certainly don't disagree with you here. Perhaps my major gripe about a particular species for zoos is Polar Bears. afaik, the only facility in the world that is close to being capable of housing them is the Detroit zoo.

Every time I see Polar Bears in the typical enclosure you find--a self-contained glorified otter habitat with about 100 feet of walking space--I see nothing but miserable bears. It pisses me off, really.

In fact, I think Detroit takes in various number of Polar Bears from other zoos around the world because they have the reputation of being specialists.

I've only seen one or two zoos that have a good space for elephants:

NC Asheboro zoo--you rarely see these elephants b/c they are way the fuck out beyond viewing range in their simulated savannah space.

A noble cause but it takes money to do all that. Zoos bring in the money.
