Ha, guy on teen Jeopardy gets pwned..

2nd place guy had $17,193, 1st place had $21,900 coming into final Jeopardy.

The second place guy's odd score was due in part because of a strange wager he made which got him the 193 extra dollars.

Final Jeopardy comes around and the #2 guy gets it right and bets all but $3, putting him at $34,389.

Finally we go to the guy in first place, who got it right as well, and bid $12,395, which he thought would put him above #2 guy had he risked it all. However he ended up with $34,295, $94 behind.

The moral then, is to make odd bets in double Jeopardy and hope the other guy can't do math.
 
Yeah, I saw that. The chick said one of her nicknames is "Raging Hormones" during the interview. :laugh:

It doesn't really affect your story, but 17,193 + 17,190 (all but 3 dollars) = 34,383

Something didn't add up when I read it, just the math nazi in me. The guy actually lost by $88 dollars.

It's a tournament so I think 2nd and 3rd do get something.

I thought it was pretty funny, math certainly isn't that poor kid's strong point.

Sorry, he started at 17,196 and bet all but $3 which would be $17,193 which results in $34,389.

I knew I was going to make a mistake and leave it to AT to correct the math 😛

From the way I remember the tournaments working, the first "rounds" are elimination rounds. The winner each day moves to the final number of players....6 or 9 or some number divisible by 3.

They'll have a few days of prelims......and populate half the spots with winners. The rest of the spots will be determined by the highest dollar amounts of the remaining "losers" from the previous rounds. I've seen all three of one day's competition move to the next round.......the winner of that day and the other two finished with high enough totals to move them along, too.

They wind up with the final 3 and typically do a 2-day "final", and add the two days' winnings together to determine the ultimate winner. Cars, lots of money, etc. are among the prizes for the top winner. And the cash is usually much more than any of the players can amass in the last 2-day Jeopardy-off.
