H55 Motherboards and 8-pin 12V connectors

I am looking at an upgrade for a system to a Core i3 530 with H55 lga 1156 based Mobo. Most of the new mother boards have 8-pin 12V connectors and the power supply in the upgrade system has only a single 4-pin 12 connector. Will I have to get a power supply as well or will the old one be good enough? The reason I ask is because I have seen some mother boards with the the 8-pin connector have a cap/cover on half of them. Leaving just the 4pins for use. So I am not totally sure if the second 4-pin is absolutely necessary.
