H264 video samples ?

I notice that the inquirer is claiming that the H264 video playback can't be done by CPU, in their article here.

This confuses me, as videolan client showed no problems at all in playing HD trailers from the apple site which claimed to be H264 encoded.

So to resolve the confusion - does anyone know what the deal is ? Is there some specific version of H264 content that is particularly CPU intensive ? If so, can anyone provide a link to anything in that format ?

Only 1080p clips encoded with h.264 have playback problems. Videos at lower resolution or bitrate playback fine on current CPUs. For h.264 clips, only ones are at Apple's HD Gallery

Thanks, but the link you provided is to the HD trailers from the apple site which I mentioned worked fine 8).

None of those have any problem whatsoever playing back on an X2 - cpu load about 20% with videolan client.

So, presuming the clips on the apple site are not 1080p clips, there are none available and I will have to make some myself to test them ?

Yeah, I know you had checked Apple's page, but it's the only place currently using h.264. And yeah, 720p content only. The 1080p stuff was removed a while ago.

I can tell its not running at movie FPS on 720p, but its pretty close. and my system isn't all that super either.

I'm playing the demos now and I am not impressed for HDTVIP. Maybe on a computer monitor but not on a full >32" display. This is only 720P, no wonder you don't see 1080I or p.

Which clips are you referring to? None of those clips are HD. They are only DVD resolutions.

Have you checked the system requirements for 1080p QuickTime playback on a PC?

Dual 2.8GHz Xeon and 1GB of RAM. Insane.

The serenity trailer also shows around 20-30% cpu usage when playing through videolan client and 50% when played through QT7.

Playing through both of them at the same time, it runs 70-80%.

I'd have to guess that the info I linked in my original post is simply flatout wrong ;p
