H. R. Giger alien in Scotland?

Amazing the stuff you learn every day just floating around the web. This gargoyle is on the 11th century Paisley Abbey Church in the centre of Paisley, Scotland. So what came first?

H R Giger lived and worked/studied at an artists' colony in Gruyere, Switzerland (home of the famous cheese and heavy cream). The school is now the HR Gieger museum. I went there, for the cheese and a nearby wine festival, completely oblivious that this museum was there, within the very midieval town center and decked out with freaky aliens and weird-ass statues.
