SpoR is right. G3 was the best mouse ever.
Mine is aging and I've been trying to replace it. I tried G9, G500, MX Anywhere, something from Microsoft and a bunch of others. I know it takes a while to get used to new gear, but they all failed me in one way or another.
Why I still love my G3?
- Perfect positioning of back/forward buttons.
Thumb click for back, ring finger for forward. Easy and fast access. Many newer mice have these buttons in awkward positions, often requiring an unnatural grip or repositioning of hand before attempting to click these buttons. Thus, slowing down and inducing strain.
Or, have both on the left side for the thumb, which can be okay - but not ideal.
- Size.
This mouse isn't trying to be "ergonomic" and contoured and that's a good thing. The base of my palm can rest comfortably while I'm moving the cursor around with my fingers, and because the mouse isn't cut off in the back like G9 or MXA, my palm receives just enough support to make it comfortable during those long hours of photoshopping.
- Middle click.
Opening links in new windows, closing tabs, opening new instances of programs in Win7. These are all time-and-effort saving functions I can't live without. This issue was a deal-breaker for Mx Anywhere - while an excellent mouse in so many ways, its middle button is really unfortunately positioned.
- Accurate, precise laser
Today, this is standard on every good mouse. But back in 2006, coming from LED mice, this was big.
Overall, this mouse is a perfect extension of my body. My clients and colleagues are always amazed by my computer handling speed and I owe it all to this mouse. I have no idea what I'll do if I can't find a suitable replacement.
MX anywhere comes close. If Logitech extend its body a bit, put middle click back where it belongs, and move the forward button on the right side of the mouse, they'll have a mouse I'll be willing to pay hundreds of dollars for. Wireless is nice, of course, but secondary.
