Looks like a pretty sweet deal can be had on a .357 sig, a caliber with which I have no experience. Does anyone else have any experience with it?

The .45s appear to be harder to come by, demanding a much higher price ($100-$200 more.)

I've got about 7 hours to make a decision.

Being a federal agent, I'd say Jack Bauer probably uses either a .40 caliber or .357 Sig. Although he can be seen in some episodes with a USP Compact Tactical, which only comes in .45.

How much do you shoot? Typically the .357 rounds are more expensive than the .45s (given the same round).

Is this going to be a carry gun and possibly be asked to defend your life someday or a safe queen?

It will likely see some usage as a carry gun. Currently I rotate through carry guns: Sig 228, Sig 245 and Kimber Ultra Compact.

The Secret Service uses .357 sig, apparently it's got tons of stopping power.

Probably won't be shot a whole lot, just enough to get used to it initially.

The .357 sig has arguably as much or more stopping power than the .45 ACP. It's often compared to the 10mm auto.

Tough decision.

If it were me I'd go for the .357Sig chamber. I like the caliber almost as much as I like the .45. The reason I'd go with the .357Sig in this case is because you are talking a compact. The round is more agreeable to the frame. Also, you may be able to get a .40 barrel and shoot both calibers withe the same gun by changing out the barrels.

You can, but the barrels are $250 from H&K! :Q

Still much cheaper than a new gun.. ;)

If you already have a .45, go for the .357. Expand your horizons! :p

You may be able to buy an aftermarket, I did for a couple of Glocks. I actually did a 9mm extended and ported on a G22 frame for one of them. Anyways $250 isn't that mutch to be able to shoot two calibers from the same gun, and keep it all factory.

Ammo is available at Walmart and costs the same as .45 ACP... They also had at least 10 different brands. Cheaper than dirt has an even bigger selection also at good prices.

I thought the ammo would be expensive too, until I actually looked at it.

Yeah, I was going to suggest going to Cheaper than Dirt since I see you are in Colleyville.

Where do you go shoot?

It's all arguable though. .45 has been proven over and over and I like things like that.

I won the 357 sig model. I'll get it this week sometime and take it out to the range with the 228 two-tone I won a few days ago.

I can't speak for the .357 model but I have the USP Compact in .45 and it is a very nice weapon.

The 9mm, .40 cal and .357 sig are all a little bit more compact than the bulkier .45 Compact, as I understand it. I should have it in 2 or 3 days.

Is there a difference in how many rounds each mag will hold? I don't think there would be, but if one shell was a bit smaller then the other - and you could fit at least one more round in each mag - that would be the deciding factor for me.

The .45 compact holds 8+1 I believe. The .357 sig & .40 holds 12+1, the 9mm holds 13+1.

As far as one more round in a mag, frankly, if you didn't get it done in the first 13 shots, that one extra probably isn't going to either.

remember.....you're looking to 'triple tap' any threat....what weapon allows you to get those 3 shots into your assailant the quickest, regardless of caliber?
