## Please Note: This deal is dead. However, many who have received their H/K 8000 receivers from OneCall are getting those that were manufactured on Janaury 2002. The receivers that were manufactured during this time period have a very distinct hum that appears while using the center channel fors listening. Some recourses to resolve this situation are as follows:

1) Contact OneCall and order a replacement receiver. The down-side to this option is that they could ship you another receiver that was manufactured during January 2002 - - and you have to pay the shipping to get the bad receiver back to them.

2) Search for a local H/K authorized repair center. Apparently, H/K has several repair centers that are within driving distances for most people. This should save on shipping charges. The only down-falls to this option are: a) Does H/K know how to resolve this situation? b) Are you willing to live without your new receiver for a few weeks with the Holidays upon us?

Personally, Here's some actions that I would take to ensure the situation gets resolved (these are based on my personal experiences with various companies):

1) Contact OneCall and demand that they send out a courier to pick up the "problematic" receiver and ship it back at *their* expense. While OneCall couldn't have known the exact manufacturing date of the receivers because that data is contained on the back panel of the receiver itself, they should have had access to the serial numbers. Certainly, the serial numbers are properly displayed on the outside of the box. Plus, H/K should be able to authenticate which range of serial numbers fall within the manfacturing dates of January 2002. With this option, have OneCall give you a refund of the purchase price and move onto another product.

2) Contact H/K. Demand that they replace the receiver with a *corrected* version. Certainly, H/K - without a doubt - should be very, very aware of this problem at this point in time. If they deny there are any issues, then they have B.S. up to their eyebrows. This should provide you with a new receiver without the "hiss" issues and H/K should cover all of the expenses for shipping.

In my experience, having to take a receiver to the repair center because of a defect that was present right out of the box is total crap. When you purchase something, you have reasonable expectations that it should work properly. Yes, sometimes, items do arrive DOA, but this is not a DOA issue. This is an issue that has been talked about for several months. Certainly, H/K has had enough opportunity to issue a recall for the affected products, but didn't do sh!t.

I own a H/K receiver, and IMHO, they have the most neutral sounds.

I like H/K quite a bit, but this puppy is out of me league. I'm sure its an awesome receiver though.

bump for good measure../\/\

Bought it. Great customer service...they called me 2 hours after the purchase and told me they would give me an extra $40 off ( I couldn't get the $40 code to work and they said it was an error on my part...that it had already been deducted from the original price). Final price...$1187 and change. Shipped already.

I feel sorry for the individual on Ebay that is selling this same receiver for a "buy it now" price of $1,449 + $65 shipping. Yes, this receiver is out of the league for many of us. However, it's not everyday where one can purchase a "flagship" receiver for under $1,200. Heck, even the new Denon AVR-3803 runs $1,199 (list) and sells for that price at many authorized dealers.

The thing to keep in mind about H/K is that they don't lie when it comes to their power ratings. This 8000 is a beast. I thought my 46 Lb. Sony was tough to move around - the H/K weighs in at 53 Lbs.

My only concern about the AVR-8000 is the video switching bandwidth.. only 35 Mhz :-(
I'm also a little worried about the lack of rs-232 (no upgrades in case of bugs).

the Denon 3803 at around $900 is a very tempting alternative

I'm also a little concerned about some Quality issues that have surfaced on some of the forums.
HK's Quality control has been lackluster of late.
The Logic-7 would be awesome though..
Any comments by owners of the HK-AVR8000 would be welcome...

I don't think there has been much mention of quality issues recently. I do remember reading about some H/K quality issues, but those are about two years behind us at this point.

The biggest quality control issue with the AVR8000 is with the Jan 2002 build, which has a slight center channel hum you can hear from about 1' away from the speaker. It doesn't get louder with volume, and even the pickiest people say that they cannot hear it at all in a silent room from more than 2-3' away.

You theoretically need 35-37mhz to fully switch 720p or 1080i video. However, in practice, the quality of the components matters more than just the bandwidth. If you have a display that can reach full 720p or 1080i resolution, you MAY see a slight softening of the picture in some feeds. However, very VERY few televisions can reach these resolutions. No consumer tube based CRT TV's can that I know of (including the newest Loewe Acondas, though they can come close to 720). 50"+ Plasma TV's can, of course, along with many digital projectors, 9" CRT based front projectors, etc...

Logic 7 is pretty awesome. I find I listen to it more than straight DTS-ES or Dolby Digital (or THX-EX). The AVR8000 can overlay it right over digital multichannel sources. I believe the next one up is the Lexicon DC2 pre/pro ($3000 or so new street price). I've had my AVR8000 for about 9 months now. When I trade up, it'll probably be a Lexicon MC12B or something similar.

EzSet is actually pretty easy to use. There's a microphone in the remote, and it can help you autocalibrate the AVR8000 to your room and speakers. I double checked it with a RS sound dB meter, and it seems accurate to about 1dB or so.

It's a HUGE receiver (very deep), so make sure your audio rack has the room for it. Just FYI. :)

Apex, thanks for the great feedback.
I'm pretty much down to Denon 3803, H/K 8000, Pioneer Elite 45TX or just wait for H/K 7200...
It's a pretty agonizing decision :)

My suggestion is to go listen to them if you can. I listened to a Denon AVR5803, Pioneer Elite VSX-47TX & VSX-49TX, Kenwood Sovereign 5900, Marantz SR9200, Onkyo 989, and a bunch of others. Only your ears can tell you what's best for you. :)

Stay away from Hot Deals forum until 12/16. Find something to distract self until temptation passes.

Wonder how I could sell this to my wife as an Xmas present to her?

This is the last day for this "special" price. For those who have pulled the trigger and ordered one, can I live through you vicarously so I can also enjoy the receiver? Thanks! :D

As if it wasn't tought enough for me to live with this deal hanging over my head during Saturday and Sunday, they go ahead and extend the deal another day. Ugh! I'm going to have to utilize some of that RossMAN restraint to get through the day. Wait, RossMAN doesn't have any restraint. ;)

I'll agree - a sign from someone. However, it's one more day that I would need to agonize. If the deal had ended yesterday, the issue of thinking about this receiver would have been put to a close.

On a semi-related note, I was at my local Circuit City store this morning and they want $999 for the new H/K '525' receiver + tax. For about $150 more, one can own the H/K flagship receiver - delivered to their doorstep. Impressive!!

I should also point out, Costo.Com has had some pretty impressive prices on H/K gear from time-to-time. On the '8000' Costco.Com wants $1,699 + shipping for this receiver. I think this might give you some kind of idea just how "hot" this deal it.

Is there any way we can find out if these AVR8000s are not from the Jan 2002 batch that Apex referred to ?

I have this receiver and I can tell you that it is worth EVERY PENNY of this $1200.

I got mine about 2 months ago when they had another sale going on, albeit not as good as this but close to it.

It has been a flawless performer for me.

I would like the remote to better but it really doesn't matter since I have a pronto anyway.

Great Deal here!!

I'd be willing to bet that the receivers on the shelves today were manufactured between August - October. I doubt that you would get one of the January 2002 receivers -- because those should have all been circulated through the various distribution / retailer systems at this point in time. Plus, if you were to get one of the January 2002 receivers - and noted the issue that was reported, a simple call to OneCall would get your situation resolved and a new receiver would be on its way to you.

[Edit]: It looks like I was wrong. OneCall has been shipping the receivers out. One individual so far has received an 8000 with a manufacturing date of January 2002. :(

I've been reading a number of forums about the AVR8000, and it seems that OneCall hasn't been terribly cooperative with the 1/02 defect, and HK has been even less cooperative. HK doesn't seem to be acknowledging this as a manufacturer's defect, and so OneCall will replace it, but you have to pay for the shipping of the unit which weighs roughly 70 lbs. I'm debating on whether or not I want to pick one up for $1,187.88. It seems almost too good to pass up, but I think you have to be prepared to receive a unit with the center channel defect.

~~~ For those who did not get in on this deal, don't fear. One member at the Home Theater Forum has indicated he received his receiver and it's dated January 2002. It appears that the H/K 8000 receivers manufactured during this time period have experienced "hiss" on the center channel. Models made after this date, appear to have the situation resolved. On another note, I read of an individual who has a local audio shop that is authorized to sell H/K - and the price for him would have been under $1,000 for this receiver. I don't know where this individual is located - because his profile information was not present. Personally, having the option of purchasing this beast locally - and having the opportunity to verify the date of manufacturing seems like a good way to go. However, I'll keep watch over the other dates of manufacturing that people are posting in regards to what they receive from OneCall and keep this post updated.
