how low can fps truly drop on a gsync monitor before it become apparent?

point is.
why put that extra money into a gysnc monitor with a useless high refresh rate by powering it with 1 gpu?
vs
putting that money into another gpu for higher fps on a nicer ips monitor?

970 ($310) + 970 ($310) + PB278Q ($450) = $1070

I would personally see if you can try out the Acer XB270HU before deciding on the SWIFT or not. The SWIFT has some flaws that can pop up after 3+ months of use.

As for g-sync in general, I really like it and it really smooths out the stuttering from major FPS shifts. You can put more power in the system but if the game doesn't support SLI or has areas of the game that overwhelm the cards, the g-sync monitor can pick up the slack.

For minimum refresh rates of the monitor for g-sync? It depends on the monitor, the majority will be set at 30 and under where you will not get the benefit of g-sync.

90% of folks who say they plan to add another gpu and never do. by the time they get the itch to finally upgrade. the next generation is better. so they just go with the next gen. and the cycle repeats.

as for the 10% that do upgrade. they do so with an month or two. the delay is simple due to lack of initial capital. not an open future option to do so.

Single gpu + gsync will be a better experience than dualgpu without, especially in shooters like bf4.

Yeah but Gsync would follow to the next single GPU too.

This seems to be shaping up to be another VHS vs. Beta war. The real question on my mind is will we ever get monitors that support both standards. I'm not really all that keen on dropping the cash on something that may or may not be around in the future. And buying into one of them pretty much locks you into either NV or AMD for the foreseeable future.

I don't see how nVidia is going to not support variable refresh through DP 1.2a. They just won't call it FreeSync.
