Gypsies here in America

Are Gypsies a race or a culture?
Where did they come from?

I've known a handful, and there has been a few common threads, thru and thru.

They sell used cars
They will read your palm or predict your future, for a fee
They will find and sell you a baby, if not their own
They will take your watch or ring on pawn
They always seem to have money
They do not mingle or interbreed
They do not eat out at most places, but prefer to prepare their own food

But most seem to be honest in their dealings with others, including non-gypsies.

Also, back in the day, I could never figure out where they went to school.
There were some hotties and I really wanted to get to know them, but it was like talking to a wall.

Maybe not a race or culture, but a religion?

I believe they are a culture and it originated in the Balkans - haven't heard of a particular religion practiced. They are a dominant patriarchal culture that marry their children off very young. I also believe they have been persecuted in times of war.

The ones in the U.S. that I've heard about are known to be in the construction business - house and road/driveway paving. They don't have a very good reputation as far as honesty.

When I went to Europe the gypsies were everywhere- begging, scamming, crying, etc. They were horribly annoying.

I live in a country with quite a number of gypsies and, here at least, they have a bad rep. Two recent events show the twisted idea they have of justice: don't touch or dis me, take all the abuse I give you.
(1) A non-gypsy truck driver bumped and knocked down a gypsy girl who had run into the street. She was unharmed and it was her fault. The driver was dragged from his vehicle and killed by a group of gypsy onloookers.
(2) A gypsy folk singer, while driving without a license, hit and killed a pedestrian and drove off from the scene. When tracked down, the family first alleged a brother, a minor, had been driving to lower any sentencing. When this was uncovered as a ruse and the folk singer was prosecuted instead, there was a gral uproar in the gypsy community about "persecution." First sentence was one to three years in jail, which the victim's family appealed as too lenient. In spite of death threats, this family persevered and the sentence was doubled.

One gypsy woman who comes into the tapas restaurant I own plays the loving and friendly type to ask for constant favors, bums cigarettes off other patrons, and will turn into a cursing foul-mouth beast whenever anyone refuses any of her many claims to "payo" charity (payos are non-gypsies in their lingo). Why not refuse her entry? Well, I need my windows. What I do do is use a bit of subterfuge to get her to move on (she ain't too smart).

Whether or not gypsies are a race, an ethnicity or simply a culture, their meme set is self-serving and unethical. I have no respect at all for professional victims/victimizers. Any culture with this tilt is hardly deserving of anything but scorn. As far as I am concerned, the only good gypsies are on the road and heading in the other direction.

damn gypos are a scourge. just mention gypsies to anyone born in europe, especially the old folks, and they freak. last year some american gypos were on the news, and despite not so good english, my 93 year old grandmother immediately recognized their kind. "they look like a bunch of gypsies." "they are gypsies, grandma." she went ballistic!

They do indeed use kids for distraction scams. I was at Notradame in Paris, knelt down to tie my shoe and a Gypsy girl comes up and asks if I speak English. I replied in my best clipped English accent, 'I'm terribly sorry, I am afraid I do not.'. She left.

I always thought it funny that my dad referred to them as shit pumpers. They'd come by his store sometimes.

my sister talked of multiple occasions (in northwest Ohio), where a family of Gypsies would walk into her tanning salon and a couple of the younger ones would walk toward the back or just demand all the attention of the employees, while the older ones would try and sneak behind the counter to grab assorted lotions. Mind you, these lotions always sold over $30.

PC is half of what is making the modern world so damned soft. one of the things we really need to get rid, or at least cut back on. and one of the few things the Russians have right is the lack of PC over in their country.
