Gym memberships

Everyone has passed by a gym and seen those 1/2 deals and what not.

I'm at madison Heights, Michigan. Pretty close to detroit. I know i have a gold's gym down the block and i think there is a Bally's near me as well.

I was wondering what is a good price for a gym membership. I'm a fairly light user, once or twice a week just to gain some strength here and there. I never been to a GYM, i went to the YMCA back in chicago like 2 times and got a light work out going.

Whats a regular deal and whats a good deal? I've seen the $19 down and $19 a month on TV for bally's that seems rather cheap and i think there is a catch there.

I'm not a fat person at all, i'm rather skinny. 6'0 and about 160lb. Last time i recalled i only benched 100lb but then again my excuse is i never worked out period aside from high school gym class.

Avoid Bally's like the plague. The catch is the 3 year installment contract they lock you into.

So 30/ a month is a fair or great deal? I'm not big into contracts at all. Seeing as how i never had a memebership i dont know how dicated i am to this.

$30 and lower is considered a great deal.

However, I think many places will only give you that rate if you purchase like a 3 year package right away.

i'm considering going to a YMCA. I have one pretty close to me. I haven't been to the local YMCA here but the one i went to had a decent sized workout area. Anyone have a membership to the YMCA so i can get an idea of how much it might cost me. I'm going to walk in this weekend and get the info.

The catch with Bally's is you have to pay for multiple years at once and that $19/mo is probably a monthly rate based on financing at >20%. I know because they tried to sell me when I went to cash in my 2 week trial. The guy was pretty shrewd but I told him I was an accountant and he stopped the numbers bullshvt. I can see how non-financial savvy people getting effed in the ey.

I did 24 hour fitness, $600 for 3 years, $12/mo after that.

I payed $199 (2 extra personal trainer sessions included) for the initiation/enrollment fee, and $24.95/month after that. You have to pay first and last month at the beginning.

Do NOT EVER (EVER EVER EVER!) join Ballys. They lied to my face and told me that I could cancel at any time for any reason for $50. I decided to cancel after about 9 months and they refused to even return my phone calls. I only started getting calls a couple months after I told my credit card to stop paying them and they would tell me that there was nothing they could do and there wasn't anyone around who could help me. Finally I filed a complaint with the BBB explaining the whole situation and they responded that they are going to drop all the charges and cancel my contract. If you want more information, just google Ballys and class action. You'll find a ton of information.

I'm still paying $25/mo at the Y... i've had this membership for like 8-9 years now, and i'm still getting it under the student's price! I just have to show them my university ID each year.

Home gym from Overstock.com: $400
Assembly time: 4 hours
Three 3'x3' rubber mats to go under it in the garage: $60
Working out however and whenever you want and never getting a rash from some other guy's sweat: Priceless

I recently went to the YMCA to get a membership because I want to get back into shape. I found out it costs like $38 a month. To me thats a ripoff, I would probably only go 2-3 times a week for an hour at most. Wasnt the YMCA originally free? It should be at least fairly cheap since a lot of students go there and cant really afford that.

$20/month, unlimited use, no restrictions. SWEET basketball court.

Local gym, Milpitas Health & Fitness.
