Citizens are afraid because Obama is ordering the murder of us without trial.

Thanks for yet more of your usual, groundless fear mongering lies.

Uhhh, no. I just wanted to point out that the one fellow that called the other fellow a liar was a liar. He has espoused his version of morality for years here and it appears to be purely politically motivated.

I support the decision. Of course he isn't lying...

WASHINGTON - The Obama administration has taken the extraordinary step of authorizing the targeted killing of an American citizen, the radical Muslim cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who is believed to have shifted from encouraging attacks on the United States to directly participating in them, intelligence and counterterrorism officials said Tuesday.

I just think it's funny that we are using it against the loony left, when we, and when I say we I mean some people that supported killing his bitch ass before, have wanted him dead for a while.

What's the difference between 'detaining' these prisoners at Gitmo or 'detaining' them in Illinois or wherever? I don't get this...please explain.[
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OK Doc, I will take a stab at it, If the alleged enemy combatants were being held within the USA, our courts would have jurisdiction in terms of deciding what if any constitutional rights they have, if they were held at a allies prison, their courts might grant these people rights, but because they are being held at a US military base inside Castro's Cuba, GWB, as commander and chief, has been largely successful in keeping our courts at bay by citing national defense secrets.

Nope. The SCOTUS has ruled that GITMO is on U.S. soil for legal purposes.

Colonel Wilkerson, who was General Powell’s chief of staff when he ran the State Department, was most critical of Mr Cheney and Mr Rumsfeld. He claimed that the former Vice-President and Defence Secretary knew that the majority of the initial 742 detainees sent to Guantánamo in 2002 were innocent but believed that it was “politically impossible to release them”.

I suppose that 'in general' they may have known some were innocent. If they didn't work to have the system sort them out and release the innocent ASAP that's inexcusable. For this and other reasons, I don't think the US should take (foreign) people out of their country (or country of capture). It just looks to much like kidnapping etc.

I don't get how it's “politically impossible to release them” if they're known to be innocent. I don't see the 'political problem' with that. On the contrary, retaining innocent people IS a political problem, along with some other problems too.

Colonel Wilkerson, a long-time critic of the Bush Administration’s approach to counter-terrorism and the war in Iraq, claimed that the majority of detainees — children as young as 12 and men as old as 93, he said — never saw a US soldier when they were captured. He said that many were turned over by Afghans and Pakistanis for up to $5,000. Little or no evidence was produced as to why they had been taken.

He also claimed that one reason Mr Cheney and Mr Rumsfeld did not want the innocent detainees released was because “the detention efforts would be revealed as the incredibly confused operation that they were”.

If true, sounds like a pretty crappy operation to me. Another reason not to remove them from their country. I don't know if they did, but seems like at least some preliminary investigation should have been conducted before you put these people on a plane for GITMO.

I suppose we'll hear more as the court case progresses. Let's see if it moves past the 'he said, she said' stage.

You too? Read the OP. This has nothing to do with the REMAINING detainees, the ones who really are believed to be terrorists. GWB and company kept NON-terrorists locked up, people that wouldn't be tried in Illinois, Guantanamo, or anywhere else. Do you care to comment on that, or do you want to continue changing the subject?
Sheesh...I was asking Whampon a question related to NIMBY being the reason for GITMO not being closed. Somebody piss in your Cheerios this morning? Or is this a personal problem with me? Do you care to comment on that? Seriously.
