Good afternoon all, just wondering how guild wars is performing for ppl with low end vid cards or laptops.

My system is a i5-2450 (2.5 Ghz stock/3.1 Ghz turbo) and a amd 6650m. For anyone playing now how is your frame rates? How does your computer handle PvP server battles?

I'm running an Athlon 5400+ and a Radeon HD4870 512mb. At 1680x1050, I'm averaging 15-35ish fps. I think that is on the auto setting as I haven't messed with the settings. It's not unplayable but it's not great. I don't really do pvp so I have no experience with that. I'm mainly going to play pve so that's what I've been playing so far. I don't know if this will help you but I thought I'd try. :)

While the 4870 has aged, it is still a good competitor for higher end laptop discrete graphics. I'd like to think the CPU is what is crushing you or maybe your memory.

The system in your sig looks good enough.

Just to be clear - MOST MMOrpg's suffer from population and distance viewing. The distance viewing should be a little easier to handle since the areas are mostly instanced, however this can cause a lot of population issues too.

So, while your graphics card is a good focus for 98% of games out there, games like these are still limited by CPU & Hard drive. An SSD would make a world of difference. This allows for the random loads that your computer needs to handle, such as someone popping into the instance, and the constant redrawing that takes place where a new texture may need to be loaded if it isn't cached already.

EDIT:

GW2 is more unique in the fact they made it a pretty graphical game. So in general, you cannot have any weak links :)

My laptop is meh, and I can run it around 10-15 fps.

My desktop with i5-2400, 6950 Raedon, runs it real well.

In WvW i find the biggest performance issue is my internet connection, i max out at around 60KB/s and in the large fights it's not enough

I have a 3570k@4.5ghz paired with an HD4870 512mb. Fps is usually 40-50 but can drop into the 30's in very busy areas. I run 1920x1200 and auto put me at mixed medium and high settings. GPU-Z reports I use around 250mb of vram with medium textures. I'll get the specifics when I get home if you'd like.

I have the 5400+ *mildly* overclocked from 2.8ghz to 3ghz. I have 4gb of ram but since I'm still on XP it doesn't show all of it. I don't really wanna go crazy with upgrades but I've considered maybe trying one of the quad core phenom 2's at newegg. I don't know if the quad core would honestly help or not but been considering that and a video upgrade. I don't upgrade my video very often and to be honest I'm a bit skeptical about overclocking very much as if I fried it.....I'd be without. It would take a while to be able to afford to replace it.
I've thought about going big with the video so I wouldn't have to upgrade for a while but.....not really sure what the best course of action is at this time.

I know that the i5 and i7 will offer the best upgrade but I'd kinda like to stick with AMD if I can. I know that they're the underdog and I've honestly always had acceptable performance with them. Also, a cpu upgrade would be cheaper than buying a new board, cpu, and ram.

So... have you actually tweaked your graphics settings yet? Or are you still playing it on default? You shouldn't really be considering any of these things until you take a moment to look at the in-game graphics options.

For all you know, bumping down a couple of graphics options will make the game run buttery smooth and you'll have no need to upgrade.

My PC is a few years old and due for an upgrade, but it still plays pretty well once some of the settings are turned down. I don't even notice the medium settings once I get into playing the game. I'm running a mix of high/medium/low with some effects disabled.

I did have one WvW battle where I just got into the WvW area and was trying to run to the battlefront with speed buffs. I saw a crowd of my own team running the opposite direction, but I didn't see what they were running from, so I kept going forward since the battle lines looked further ahead. All of a sudden, I started taking damage and ended up dead although there was nothing around me. After a few seconds on the ground, enemy players started appearing all around me in front and behind. So, a huge mass of enemy players was all over me, but I couldn't see them at all for a while (much too late to avoid dying).

That only happened once though and it was just after I had gotten into the WvW area, so maybe that was part of it. Anyway, lesson learned.
