im 25 with a clean record. I've shopped around and found $400/ year was the best price i could get on my 04 GS500f, which isn't even remotely in the same insurance class SS bikes.

Which i'm sure i'm over covered on the bike, its my first year and things are bound to happen. So its $250 comp and $500 collision. $5000 per person medical on top of 100/200/100 all that for $400. I could of gotten by with $500 deduct and normal everything for like $290. But my first year i wouldn't mind spending more.

Back on topic, I was bored at work and started looking at the typical batch of Supersport bikes cbr600rr, gsxxr 600/750, r6, daytona 650. I looked at most online insurance vendors and they are in the $1200/year for $500 deduct and standard everything else. Are you guys really paying it? Or dropping it down to literally bare min. which looks about $600-700 for me. SS are a lot faster yes, worth about double what my GS500 is worth but really, 2 years of insurance on a 600rr and i could by another GS500.

Looks like some of cheaper upgrade paths for me is ninja 650r ($600ish) and SV650 which is about $700, bandit 1200 was $700ish. Any other bikes i'm missing.

Most people I know take the bare minimum insurance. Which kinda defeats the purpose of insurance I guess.

And yes. Insurance is pretty expensive for supersports if you don't have 5-10 years of riding history with no incidents/background.

Having said that, I'm 28 and I pay $130 for 6 months on my ZR7S with 50k/100k/50k, and 500 deductible on comprehensive and collision.

What insurance are you using? An sv650 for me with $250 deduct and 50/100/50 would run me $550 year. I'm only 21.

Experience helps a lot though from what I've seen. It should drop after a year or two with no tickets or claims.

SS bikes are still stupid expensive for me though. To the tune of $120-150 monthly for the same coverage. More than I pay for my car('11 Mazda 3 sport) and same coverage.

i pay like 270 for 250/250 deduc and like 250/500/250 on my aprilia tuono 1000

but Im married and 29.

when I was your age and not married I had to use progressive. I switched after the wedding to Country (3 years ago) and just went back to progressive

I was paying around 300 when I got married for the same coverage on my 03 SV1000S though

and I am in IL but had no recent moving violations on my record

i'm with state farm but i've mainly compared to geico and progressive.

I'm planning on dropping some coverage next year but just trying to figure out what. I was leaning towards bumping up collision to $1000 and dropping down to 50/100/50 as i dont think a motorcycle can do as much damage as my car. I live in chicago, much like any other bike cities thief is VERY HIGH and also the stupid people/kids who push over bikes or knock them over when parking. So i need my comprehensive for sure.

I also dont get a muti-car policy discount because my car is in my dad's name, i just pay the bill.

Trouble with sport bikes is the plastics are very expensive and a minor tipover can create thousands of dollars of rashed and broken plastic. The fact that they are stolen more frequently and crashed more frequently doesn't help either.

main reason why i park next to gsxxr's and such. higher chance of my 500 still being there.

any other bikes that i should consider? I'm looking for a slight bump in HP and hopefully FI models. I just looked into FZ6 and they aren't SS price so thats a plus. FZ6, 650R and SV650. Versys/gladuius models aren't doing too much for me.

SV is a great bike. Might try a used Triumph Street Triple if you can find one or a used Ducati Monster 696.

cost of bike and insurance is high on my list. Then it comes to what i feel good on. I haven't been on too many bikes yet but next summer it should be newer bike time, pending on whats for sale of course.

Around $375/year for the VFR1200F.

I could drop coverage and get is for cheaper, but why? That's why they call it insurance.

My Street Triple R runs me $1200/yr through State Farm & that's pretty cheap compared to the other insurance companies.

so 400/yr is considered a lot for insurance... so much so, the OP questions how one can afford it?

I'm 29 male, single. No tickets

2009 Kawasaki Ninja ZX6R
~$900/yr full coverage. 100/300/100 policy. I use the term "full coverage" even though in New Jersey, insurance doesn't cover personal injury protection for motorcycles.

What does this mean? It means if you get hurt while riding your motorcycle and rack up a hospital bill, you have to pay it out of your own pocket. Your motorcycle insurance will not cover your medical bills.

Ive had my M/C license since I was 18, now 31. It cost me $410 to insure my 07Hayabusa for the year with full coverage. I've had the bike since new and It's always been pretty cheap. I haven't had anything on my record since a huge ticket ($765) I got for blowing a wheelie down the highway back in 2002. In time as you mature and become less recklace insurance will come down. I am a true testament to that =)

I am 25 now but have had a sportbike since I was 18 and I always found insurance to be super cheap even for full coverage. I currently have a gsxr600 and I pay just under 250 a year for full coverage with way higher than minimum coverage. I recommend state farm for the best deals on motorcycle insurance.

400 bucks is nothing in the scheme of things. If someone cannot afford that much for insurance they should not be looking to get a bike.

i pay 1100/yr on my FZ6R. i'd love to know why my rate is almost triple yours for a far less race-y bike.

the triumphs hold value pretty well, mostly due to rarity. the 696's are pretty easy to find, atleast around here(same state as OP). I just spent 2 months shopping for bikes when I got my aprilia. and the triumphs were high on the list

maybe you guys aren't seeing my point. I dont think $400 is a lot for say a 600cc SS bike. I just feel $400 for my 500cc starter bike is rather on the higher side of the spectrum.

I pay $1700 per year for my car, 2005 G35. Now if i was paying $1400 for say a 95 civic thats where i would be bitching about. Its not the fact thats it $400 to insure a bike, its that particular bike that i'm bothered by. Reason why i didn't get a WRX was because rates for that car was about $2800 a year VS getting a G35, which was equal in a sense AWD, similiar HP, more comfort less sporty.

Thats my point. you guys might not see it, but cost to operate and own plays a HUGE factor in what i drive/own. I do understand bikes are luxuries and u gotta pay to play. But knowing people are paying a little less, i'm just trying to figure out who/how.
